Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Given how intertwined HYDRA and SHIELD histories are, it makes sense they can't afford to retcon one without significantly changing the other. Still could make for fun storylines.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.Everyone you know is a member of HYDRA.
That guy in front of your house? a HYDRA spy.
That weird other guy who you see once a week? HYDRA spy.
That other in the corner.....well no, he isnt a HYDRA spy, he want to be one but nobody have the heart to tell him, poor guy.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"This makes insanely logical sense since SHIELD got its start thanks to Caps actions with the SSR in WW 2 going against HYDRA.
If HYDRA is erased/destroyed in the 1930's? No Red Skull in the 1940s, possibly no motive for Erkstne to flee Germany and work with the SSR to further develop the Super Soldier Serum which could mean NO CAPTAIN AMERICA at all, given he is the direct inspiration Peggy/Howard/Phillps used for why to found SHIELD in the first place.
On one hand...destroying HYDRA early would prevent allot of pain and suffering but on the other hand...gods only knows what ripple effects that would have on time.
I imagine there will be a lot of drama and angst about just that. It's like a moral paradox. You know that the original timeline will work out in the end... except of course for everyone it didn't work out for. But the other timeline is an unknown, and may have far worse consequences in the long run (like Thanos not being defeated). It's a "for the greater good" thing, with all the moral problems that come with it. Is sacrificing all of Hydra's victims worth it to ensure the safety of the future world as you know it? Is it somehow more okay, because they "already died" in the original timeline? Just imagine it from the perspective of people at the time.
This is just one reason why time travel is best avoided...

Y'know, it occurs to me that, if Hydra didn't uncover the Tesseract, something like half of the MCU movies just plain wouldn't happen.
It brought Loki to Earth, so you'd get no The Avengers, and without Loki bringing his scepter to Earth, there'd be no Age of Ultron. And, if one of the Infinity Stones remained lost, there'd of course be no Infinity War or Endgame.
And since research into the Tesseract is responsible for both Iron Man's arc reactor and Captain Marvel's powers, they'd never become superheroes without it. And while Captain America might still exist without the Tesseract, it's doubtful there would have been a powerful and independent Hydra for him to fight without it giving them an edge.

Honestly, the event that caused the greatest Butterfly effect was probably the Frost Giants invading Earth. The Jotuns invading Earth was what brought the Asgardians to Earth, plunged the two realms in war, and resulted in the Tesseract being left behind on Earth in the first place.
I guess you could also argue the Kree creating the Inhumans was another big impact, since that led to the cult that would eventually form HYDRA and how much of an impact they made on history.

Hopefully we get a proper introduction to the Inhumans with the Ms. Marvel series on Disney+.
EDIT: Spider-Man 3 and Doctor Strange 2 have been moved to November 2021
and March 2022
respectively.
EDIT 2: Thor: Love and Thunder has been moved up to February 11, 2022 instead of February 18.

The July date is presumably being left open just in case Black Widow has to be pushed back again, which would consequently force Eternals to move to February and Shang-Chi into the July spot Spider-Man previously had.
"What If The Fox Merger Had Happened Soon Enough For Wolverine To Be in The First Avengers Movie?"
If there's a silver lining to Spider-Man 3 getting delayed to next November, it's that Disney/Marvel and Sony are (ideally) using the extra time that the delays have provided to hammer out how to keep sharing Spider-Man beyond Spider-Man 3 and whatever MCU movie Spidey shows up in.
Like, if Sony wants more connective tissue with the MCU beyond Spidey, I wouldn't mind if MCU!Blade has an Early-Bird Cameo in Morbius, on account of how they seem to have more of a rivalry going on then Spider-Man ever had with Morbius. Especially since Blade still seems to be a ways from showing up.
Actually, come to think of it, now that Spider-Man 3 has been delayed to release November 2021, then they could (in theory) go right ahead and have Daredevil, right?
It wasn't a problem in the original origin when the flight was very much not official or authorized
Forever liveblogging the Avengers

They just can't let go of HYDRA.
