Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I mean, I never stated that they were going to do it, only that I wanted them to. And it's entirely possible for them.

And I agree with your hopes. I'm just saying I don't find it likely.

Off topic but I've become really annoyed at Marvel comics' habit of including swear words only to censor them. If you can't include a word that would be said comfortably in a Tarantino movie don't bother including it.

It was kinda awkward when they did that during the last Jessica Jones run even though her first run was not shy at all about uncensored swearing.

This is only if you consider just the movies. I actually consider the first season of Jessica Jones to be the darkest stuff in the MCU.

I personally am kind of alright with comics censoring sweawords. It's a artistic flourish I kind of like.

[up] Netflix MCU isn't MCU though. It was MCU-adjacent at best, but now it's basically nothing.

In part because Disney(who owns marvel) killed it.

and the other show aren that much, at best Agent of Shield have is moment of darkness: Hive and graviton plot that saw someone severing the hands of someone else.

But inmortal hulk level? no.

Netflix was the one that ended the shows not Disney.

In regards to Samuel Stern, I say again: the Incredible Hulk is basically non-canon.

Netflix MCU isn't MCU though.
Yes it they are. All the Netflix MCU shows were part of the MCU.

I say again: the Incredible Hulk is basically non-canon.
No, IH is still canon. This is why General Ross (played by the same actor) show up in Civil War, Infinity War, and in the upcoming Black Widow.

I mean, this isn't even a "but they can't show up in movies!" question; they are literally part of the MCU, Kevin Feige announced them as part of the MCU when they were first announced, their Wikipedia entries say "Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe" and so on.

The problem is that some people believe that there are two MCUs, the movies and the shows, since the shows referenced the movies and not vice-versa, but, of course, that's not true: there is and has always been only one MCU and everything in it is canon (...aside from Inhumans).

"But then how can Mahershala Ali play both Cottonmouth and Blade?" I don't know, Gemma Chan can play both Minn-Erva and Sersi and both Captain Marvel and The Eternals are still canon.

"But the references are just one-way!" And if they weren't part of the MCU, there wouldn't be any references.

There is an argument to be made that specifically the Netflix shows and only the Netflix shows have been retconned out of the MCU, but I don't feel that argument holds water until we're explicitly told so by Word of God.

There’s the fact that the shows don’t have references or any fall out from the snap. But then you have real life Jarvis show up in Endgame.

Because they all take place before the Snap. (Or, in the case of AOS, have had weird time shenanigans happen.)

Sure they are part of MCU but in pratical level it feel like they are set in a diferent universe, Agent is the only who really use the events in a meanifull ways like the fall of SHIELD by HYDRA.

They have a TV budget. That's pretty much it.

Agent is the only who really use the events in a meanifull ways like the fall of SHIELD by HYDRA.
They still reference the wider MCU, like with Jessica Jones Season 2 references to the Raft. It's just that they are telling a more self-contained story than AOS is (although AOS has become a lot more self-contained as it went along).

It's basically like with the old Star Wars Legends Canon.

Both shows and movies are, but the movies obviously take precedence.

*hesitantly backs away from Legends reference*

I mean, the old Star Wars EU had tiers of canon, while the MCU hasn't reached that point yet. If you ask Kevin Feige, he will say that, of course everything is canon and a crossover could totally happen someday. While probably avoiding any questions about Inhumans.

Amusingly recent Star Wars movies have started making references to the wider EU canon. From the more major in Darth Maul's reappearance in Solo to the more minor in Ashoka Tano having a small voice-cameo in Rise of Skywalker.

Though I'm not sure if the MCU has ever referenced the Netflix shows.

The only references to the Netflix shows outside of other Netflix shows that I recall were the Judas bullets from Luke Cage (2016) being used in an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Danny Rand being namedropped in an episode Runaways.
