Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Also, it was posible to really adapt planet hulk? for what I get is to far away from other chararters and is waaaay to much hulk centric, isnt?.

I mean it got an animated movie a while ago that was for the most part very faithful to it.

It feels like it'd be a Hulk ending movie, as long as they find another reason to have the Hulk be wandering on space instead of Tony betraying him like that.

I'm one of those who's kind of eh on Planet Hulk. It's not bad, but it's very much a "Conan painted green and he's called Hulk" story.

As a story itself it's pretty solid, but it suffers from a recurring problem I have noticed with the Hulk that the character is hard to do with variety for a prolonged time. So writers have to scramble, which where I feel the four hundred different-colored Hulk personalities came from, and also where Planet "you know what, just make Hulk Conan" Hulk came from too.

Hulk needs more "pure" Hulk storylines. It's why I enjoy Maestro as a villain, because he wraps around more to the central theme of the duality in Banner-Hulk. Hulk's greatest enemy is himself, so it makes sense that his greatest enemy also is literally himself.

Maestro would give Bruce a you can’t fight fate worry.

He finally found a way to control Hulk but now he’s met an evil future version of himself that makes him fear that losing control is an inevitability.

I just really want to see an adaptation of Immortal Hulk. Imagine the Hulk as a Cosmic Horror Story.

Ehh...I've never read the story but I've seen the animated film. It's decent, I guess. Although, I don't know if a Planet Hulk story would work given how the story in the MCU has developed.

Also, I feel like a Planet Hulk story would feel kind of premature without having developed his rogues gallery or his supporting cast. We still don't have She-Hulk and I'd rather give her some shine instead.

Unless we get more Professor Hulk in which case I am all for. He's my favorite Avenger other than the Webhead (and BP if he counts).

I loved Planet Hulk, but World War Hulk was a clusterfuck (that artwork alone....god).

Immortal Hulk wouldn't work in the MCU because, for one thing, the MCU isn't very weird. And for another thing, MCU Hulk is especially not weird. He suffered the worst out of everyone when the movies were still trying to be "grounded." He's just a large green man who is supposedly strong but sometimes neither large nor green and is just some nerd whose chief ability seems to be being sad and a nerd.

The funniest thing to me about MCU Hulk is, like, if you wrote a fanfic where Hulk said "Hulk is the strongest one there is", you would objectively be a liar. He's gotten his ass kicked by Thor twice and is probably weaker than Carol. And this Hulk has shown exactly one sign of getting stronger when he got angrier, in a film that's basically non-canon at this point. Similar to Hulk's healing factor. He is just some green nerd.

He's not really the strongest in the comics either. There's plenty of bigger fish.

Hulk is pretty much always as strong as the plot needs him to be.

But yeah, the Infinite Strength thing has always been more of a gimmick, there are definitely bigger fish out there.

(Thanos kicking the Green One's ass f.e. has been a thing in the comics too)

Immortal Hulk wouldn't work in the MCU because, for one thing, the MCU isn't very weird.
From what we've seen of WandaVision, that won't be true for very much longer. Also: just because it isn't weird now doesn't mean there can't be weird things in it later.

There's also not a lot of other gamma people around
The She-Hulk show is going to change that.

Immortal Hulk is in the running for the best hulk run ever in my books, but it is simply too weird and too dark for the MCU as it currently stands. We've had our brushes with horror but Immortal Hulk would require a Olympic leap towards it.

Multiverse of Madness has its promises, but I'll believe when I see it.

I’m pretty sure an Immortal Hulk movie would be rated R - I’m honestly surprised it can be published with a 12+ rating. How do comic age ratings work, anyway?

I'm asking more for an Immortal Hulk show than a movie — especially since they can't make a Hulk movie anyway, since Universal still has the distribution rights (apparently). Also, Immortal Hulk is more of a long-form story designed for serialization than a single film.

How do comic age ratings work, anyway?
If it has swear words or tits, it's for adults. Anything else, it's for kids.

(I jest, but Marvel does actually have a good ratings system.)
