Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

He also maybe has a daughter in Finesse who has near identical powers to him but Tasky has no idea if she's even his & worse the fact her entire fighting style is stolen from other characters means he will forget the conversation they shared because she's immemorable.

I hate the "his powers consume his memories" retcon. It's so stupid and generic (yeah, badasses with amnesia, novel concept innit?).

I really liked the original drawback idea a lot more where Taskmaster's drawback is that he simply had photographic memory and could not forget, both the good and the bad. So every pain he ever felt is as fresh to him as always, every trauma in his childhood lingers with him forever, every lost one a eternal presence. It was a way more engaging idea.

Then again, how often do you hear of people's own abilities causing their amnesia?

It's interesting that in making Taskmaster pretty definitely an outright villain, they've gone the other direction with Black Widow II or whatever codename MCU!Yelena goes by.

IIRC She's been another character who has operated as both an ally or an enemy to Natasha and others depending on her own agenda, whereas the film version seems pretty solidly a friend/adopted sister (on current evidence.)

Seems to be, anyway. Given that this is a movie about spies, things could always end up very different than how they seem.

I keep wondering if one of her Black Widow sisters could end up replacing Natasha in the MCU.

In any case, I loved this new trailer. Felt much more like an MCU movie than the teaser.

I still say Yelena is there to start moving the pieces into place for Young Avengers.

Black Panther 2: M’Baku Actor Wants To Be Marvel Sequel’s Villain

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant promoting his new Netflix film Spenser Confidential, Duke was asked who he wants the villain of Black Panther 2 to be, and his answer was simple: "M'Baku." M'Baku is the leader of the Jabari tribe within Wakanda, and while he and T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) don't see eye to eye on a lot of things (to the point of them engaging in a duel for the throne atop Warrior Falls), M'Baku has fought alongside T'Challa multiple times. Duke explained what he finds so fascinating about Marvel villains and why he thinks M'Baku would make a good one by saying this:

[M'Baku] is a hero, but he has so much going on. I think what makes a really great villain is that they have the power of seeing things their own way, and they can define their own circumstances.

And that's what's really cool about all the MCU villains so far as well. Loki always sees things his own way, and he chooses when he's going to be an ally or an antagonist. Thanos always had the power of self-definition. That's his greatest strength. It wasn't the rings, it wasn't his superpower or the fighting. It’s that he made his mind up and said, “This is how I define justice.” Because he wasn't a bad guy; he's just a dude who was seeking ultimate justice and balance. That's not bad. But he defined it himself, and all the really great villains that Marvel interrogates always have that ability, so they can go anywhere.

RE: Guardians of the Galaxy in Thor: Love and Thunder:

While we're not sure if the Guardians' presence will be in the same capacity as, say, the other Avengers were in Captain America: Civil War, I legit want to see Quill and Thor do something wacky like busting their quads to this:

I want a scene where Thor and the Guardians come back to New Asgard for the "Royal Wedding" and find out Jane is the Future Queen of Asgard and Peter will be both offering sympathy for Thor while silently thanking the gods he's got a front row seat to this.

It was glue initially, but over time the chemical he developed was retconned to be capable of just about anything...including restoring youth. One hell of a useful glue.

I wonder if this will delay the show.

It's apparently already had an issue with not being able to shoot somewhere due to real life issues (an earthquake in another place they were planning to shoot).
