Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Mark Hamill is in a league of his own, comparing any Joker actor to him, both live action or voice, is unfair.
Just like Kevin Conroy and Batman.

Heath Ledger's technically pulling the stronger performance but in terms of capturing the spirit of the Joker as I see it, I think Nicholson is closer ("I now do what other people only dream. I make art until someone dies. See? I am the world's first fully functioning homicidal artist." is just a brilliant Joker-like quote).
The raimi trilogy had some very good casting, to be honest. Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina and Thomas Haden Church all did fantastic jobs with their characters and the first two I'd consider practically unreachable in terms of definitive live-action versions. Only really dropped the ball with Venom, sadly.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I do miss the Raimi movies. It always felt like they really cared about their villains (venom aside), in a way the MCU movies sometimes don't. Granted, the MCU will also sometimes knock it out of the park.
I wonder if this is because Spiderman has such a great, distinctive rogue's gallery that it's really hard to screw them up.

Kaze ni Nare!![]()
To be fair while the casting was bad, the effects and look were great. It's just hard to remember when they keeping feeling the need to show you his regular face.
I personally didn't mind skinny Venom, probably because I hadn't read many comics before the movies. I can see why fans of the original character were upset. The Executive Meddling was pretty clear, and I think they did a decent job fitting him into the movie considering that he wasn't part of the plan.
I'm curious if we'll actually see MCU Spidey and Sony's Venom crossover.
I heard at one point, Spider-Man 3 was going to be split into two films, and I think that would've solved a lot of problems. Apparently they scrapped the idea because they couldn't think of a good conclusion for part one, but I personally would've chosen Peter getting rid of the symbiote and it attaching to Brock. It ends the film with Peter reaching his lowest point and start his way to crawling back out, as well as leaving it on a good cliffhanger ending. For part two, you give Venom his time to shine, and give all the subplots more breathing room.

Hard disagree. Steve Blum. Knocked it out of the park and into space
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI think it's entirely fair. The main difference between Spectacular Spider-Man and many other Spider-Man adaptations is that Spectacular was really good.
I don't see why "really good" should be considered a disqualifying factor.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.![]()
That reminds me that I still need to watch that show. I've only ever saw episode.
I mean the Rami and MCU films are really good as well. Into the Spider-Verse is my favorite thing with Spider Man in general. The Animated Series as well. So I don't think being really good is that unique

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI sometimes feel alone in actually liking Ultimate Spider-Man. At least the second season onwards that is. I mean is it perfect no, but I find it harmless fun and there are worse shows.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadThere's also Marvel's Spider-Man which also pretty mediocre for the most part.
As it turns out its not the best idea to start out your show with like 4 spider-people all at the age because it rather dilutes each individual's distinctiveness.
Like if Spidey hasn't been spidering for several years then it kinda takes a lot of the bite out of him being a mentor to Miles.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Ultimate Spiderman very much Grew the Beard in later seasons, though it was still ULTIMATELY lacking.
Marvel's Spiderman has some stuff I like, but after a while I lost interest because it wasn't letting stuff happen naturally (as well as buggering the Peter / Miles relationship like
pointed out).
There have been a lot of good Spider shows and media besides Spectacular (the first two movies for one). Spectacular worked because of the time it aired, where Peter as a Teenager was a thing that hadn't really been explored since...well since he actually was a teenager. The thing is, once Miles came into existence, that time died a brutal death. You didn't need to bother with Teenage Peter, because now you had Miles. Teenage Peter was pointless. Disney and Marvel don't understand that though.
If we ever had a series like Spectacular Spiderman again, it should be Miles doing it. T'is a shame, because I like Peter in all his eras (teenager, College student, married) and I think all aspects of his history should be acknowledged.
One Strip! One Strip! With enough spiders men we can cover all the eras
Teen Miles, married Peter, spider Gwen college student?
Forever liveblogging the Avengers

Though as much as I love Ledger I don't think he's the definitive version of the Joker. Maybe in live action, but Hamill is above him. He was great in the role.
