Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Yep. Which isn't "Tom Holland shares DEEP SONY SECRETS" like someone on the last page was panicking, because we knew this. Tom's sharing his perspective on old news.
We learned this back when the divorce was originally announced. The plan was that Sony would continue making Holland's Spider-Man films, but without any connections to the MCU. Sony never had any intention of scrapping Spider-Man and starting over fresh; they were going to make that third movie, with or without Marvel.
From the beginning, Sony's considered Holland's Spider-Man to have one foot in Marvel's universe and one foot in theirs. Amy Pascal imagined a sort of crossover situation, where Sony makes their own Spider-Verse films and Marvel makes their MCU films and Spider-Man is a nebulous connecting thread between the two, with his movies being canon to both cinematic universes.
This didn't work out at the time, because Kevin Feige vehemently nixed the idea. Publicly. It was very embarrassing and I have no doubt that the bad blood it created contributed to the initial decision to sever contracts.
So when Sony announced that they wanted to break up, they weren't saying, "I want to reboot Spider-Man and fire Tom Holland." They were taking Tom Holland and going home to make the Spider-Verse surrounding Homecoming and Far From Home that Feige said they couldn't make.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.
But then Sony made the internet so mad that most tweets they made or retweeted were CRAWLING with begging/threatening replies to keep Spider-Man in the MCU.
Full disclosure: if Sony wants to make MCU-adjacent movies, I can allow it if it means Spidey stays, but they'd need a fact-checker so there's consistency going on. Because last I checked, the Daily Bugle was an internet news deal, not a newspaper. And the MCU is in 2023, not 2020.
(I'd link to the actual Instagram post, but it looks like it got deleted due to the Continuity Snarl going on.)
RE: Omega Red in Falcon and Winter Soldier: It's 4chan, so there's a 80-90% chance it might be hokum. Plus, I was under the impression that Eternals would be the one to start showing hints of mutantkind. Though if filming for the show started on October 2019, when the Fox deal was done, it could be plausible that mutants DO start there. (Assuming Black Widow doesn't have some blink and you miss it foreshadowing regarding Omega Red and/or Weapon X or however he got his powers.)

And this is apropos how or why?

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.
Because everyone agreed that Marvel and Sony having that divorce was not great? Probably should've elaborated a smidge. I know there were Zombieland: Double Tap and Charlie's Angels tweets that had nasty replies regarding Spider-Man.
Ultimately, Disney and Sony managed to kiss and make up and have it so Spidey gets one more movie to resolve that cliffhanger FFH ended on and have him appear in one more MCU thing we don't know about.
Thing is, we don't know really know all the details of this make-up deal, so the best we can do is see how Morbius and Venom 2 turn out.
EDIT: Really trying to see the bigger picture, fyi.

I was adding to this part of Tobias' post:
EDIT: Cross-posting from the SUMC thread:
Looks like Disney abandoned that October 8, 2021 date they and Sony had dibs on.

Crazy rumor hit today for Captain Marvel 2 -
Henry Cavill to play...Wolverine.
I have doubt.
Edited by Beatman1 on Feb 27th 2020 at 10:43:42 AM
Isn't he a bit big for Logan?
I know we've forgotten due to Fox-verine, but Logan is supposed to be a tiny tiny short man.
One Strip! One Strip!Yeah, I have my doubts about that:
- First of all, Henry Cavill is probably pretty busy filming the second season of The Witcher.
- Secondly, of all the characters to introduce in Captain Marvel 2, Wolverine is, uh, a weird one. Better characters to introduce would be Mystique and Rogue, who have actual connections to Carol, rather than Logan, who...was on the X-Men when Carol around.
- Thirdly, I doubt they would introduce Wolverine so soon, before they even have an X-Men movie out.
Carol and Logan have history together pre-X-Men actually. They worked together as spies. Because of course.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersCaptain Marvel 2 seems to be the main target for character introduction rumors for some reason.
This song needs more love.Because obviously Carol is the least interesting part of her movie. We can predict that from our privileged positions as misogynistic gods among men.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah misogyny sounds about right.
The sheer number of "Carol loses her powers to Rogue and goes into a coma for most of the movie" rumors is ridiculous.

This song needs more love.Well here’s the question. Is the idea that Carol is too much of a straight woman in her proverbial act that she needs another major introduction to bounce off of? Or is the idea that she can’t draw on her own, because clearly she can, and to suggest otherwise is ridiculous. CM 1 made a billion dollars.
It’s definitely true that CM 2 seems to have the most rumors of new characters. And most seem to be mutants.

That certainly does have some pretty big implications. Not least for the Black Widow movie if the spoiler character keeps his comic origin/nationality.
