Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

A couple of the Hulk villains I'd like to see in the MCU are Zzzax and Hammer and Anvil

Ooh, if you want to keep AOS in-canon, that's gonna be hard to do. Since Creel was absorbed by Talbolt... and then Talbolt got tossed into space and died.

I somehow doubt Marvel Studios would lose any sleep about that.

Talbot was pretty much a stand-in for Ross in the show anyway.

And then off course for Graviton....

Huh I just thought Taskmaster could easily appear in Winter Falcon & Shang-Chi.

Since he wears a total covering costume you can easily get him in more productions since you wouldn't have to worry about figuring out the actors schedule.

It be pretty dope seeing him fight Sam, Bucky, or Shang.

Yes I know but the mercenary nature of the character & his particular power-set makes him a perfect recurring hirable baddie against street level-characters.

It'd be interesting to see him copy Peter's web swinging.

[up][up] Yeah that’s the real main concern here.

Hopefully Widow or anyone else doesn’t kill him. It be a real loss of potential there.

Taskmaster living and being in the MCU Masters of Evil would be so tight.

Taskmaster could probably have a movie of his own after this.

"Because superheroes lead busy lives" is, and has always been, the answer to "Why didn't X participate in Y". "When Doc Ock started shooting Death Star lasers at Cincinnati, where was Iron Man?!" He was in Philadelphia trying to stop the Mandarin from turning all humans into robot chickens. Where the f*ck was Spider-Man while that was going on, HUH?

Try telling this to X-Men fans.

I mean, that's kind of different. There's a difference between "Where were you when Spider-Man was fighting Doc Ock" and "Where was anyone when Sentinels were committing genocide against sixteen million mutants on Genosha."

It happened really fast though

Like, where were the X Men when that happened? They weren’t there because they were doing other stuff!

[up]Both of these have the same answer: "We were occupied with other stuff at the time". Or if you want to go meta, "the writers wanted the story to solely be about the X-Men and no one else".

X-fans are blaming the Avengers and other superheroes for stuff that is 100% the X-office's fault.

I mean, I'm pretty sure if all the X-Men started blaming the X-office and the writers of the comics, they would all come across as Deadpool and nobody wants that to happen. We can't have an entire comic world where everyone is knowledgeable about their own fictionality, because that way lies madness (or 1/0), so things like "the X-Men blaming Captain America for never protecting mutants" has to come up sometimes or else you have to separate out the X-Men universe from the rest of the Marvel universe and everyone was mad when they thought Marvel was going to do that.

If the X-Men are going to be caught in eternal cycles of near extinction they need to go meta.

Maybe not a full Morrison but somewhere on the scale.

There are better Ross stand ins too, like Ryker, Maverick and Fortean.

Technically she just rewrote her bio.

Either way she's in Krakoa.

[up]Both can only be done if the company allows it. Might as well blame Storm for not fixing climate change or Wanda not saying "no more poverty, bigotry or wars".

You're arguing from a purely Doylist point of view here. I mean, basically ANYTHING is possible if the author just "wills" it so. Red Skull could also become a nice guy if the "company would just allow it". All discussions can be shut down by that argument

The Avengers, including Cap himself, have admitted in-universe at numerous times to not having done enough on behalf of mutantkind, so I think it is fair to discuss that story point.

Doesn't mean that they are inherently bad people, just means that they aren't perfect, they are flawed, which makes for more interesting characters.
