Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The other women in the same scene have grievances against guy villains so it wouldn’t have been a jarring change if it was another villain

Between Oliver Queen, Clint Barton and Roy Harper to a lesser extent, there's a recurring theme of male archers in fiction being crappy to women.

Wait, what did Oliver Queen and Roy Harper do? Hell, in the comics, Shado was the one who took advantage of Oliver, not the other way around, even though later writers tried to insist that he "cheated" on Dinah (he had been injured and was delirious at the time, although Shado claimed not to know that part).

Sleeping with an amnesiac Wanda (well, she was later retconned into a Doombot, that was kinda funny) was also pretty douchey.

The Shado thing was definitely a rape but Oliver has been depicted as having a problem of with staying faithful to the women he's with (which unfortunately stems from writers wrongfully interpreting Shado's rape as consensual sex). A particularly infamous example is the Judd Winick run where he cheated on Dinah with Joanna Pierce, Black Lightning's niece.

Roy isn't as bad as Oliver most of the time and he's never cheated on his girlfriends. But some of his flirting can border on sexual harassment and there is the New 52 Red Hood and the Outlaws when he sleeps with Kory who was implied to be having amnesia. There's also him calling Donna Troy a whore and saying her son died because she was a bad mother in Rise of Arsenal.

Oh god Judd Winick, whhhhhy.

Also, Scott Lobdell is a terrible writer and his characterization of Starfire (and Roy) was abysmal. And The Rise of Arsenal was just...the worst. That's the one with the drug China Cat, right? God.

Sleeping with an amnesiac Wanda (well, she was later retconned into a Doombot, that was kinda funny) was also pretty douchey.
I mean, to be fair, he also thought he was helping her by not revealing her past to her (so she wouldn't feel guilty) or telling anyone where she was. But yeah, he also slept with her. Good thing she was a robot.

Hey, while rise of arsenal was bad, roy was in a pretty dark spot on his life when he atack donna like that.

Not to said it was good but is kinda sorta understandable.

IIRC Rise was the one where Roy was carrying around a dead cat thinking it was Lian while he was higher than a kite.

Yeah...many Roy fans like to pretend that Cry for Justice/Rise of Arsenal and the early parts of Red Hood and the Outlaws didn't happen.

Captain Marvel 2 is happening, true believers. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear more at SDCC. *coughcough Rogue and Mystique coughcough*

[up]Not surprised, admittedly. Everyone in the MCU focuses on the practical. I could see her forced into something like it as a joke bit where she’s desperate to ditch it (the old lost my outfit gag) but more than that isn’t exactly practical.

I have no problem with not adapting it.

In fact, something I like about movies is the fact that they exchanged Wonder Woman's costume for an actual armor.

Even as a child, It seemed me ridiculous that these clothes were considered an armor..

Yeah. There's no doubt Diana's latest costume is her best yet.

Keeps all the themes of her classic look, manages to be practical and look like something a warrior from an ancient greek society would wear, and even performs the spectacular act of getting her back in a skirt.

They nailed it.

I'm gonna miss the Warbird costume (no lies) but Carol should stick with what she's got right now.

Besides this version of Carol is too serious, fighting villains using a leotard would be very out of character for her.

Like I said, if I were to do it, it would be for a one scene joke. Presumably ending with her blasting it. But that’s just because of the production name.
