Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I think is more Quill suffer or the same efect tony stark in the movies: is so easy to make joker with with(or in this case about him) that it what he does all the time.

Plot twist: Quill accepts that his "one" is gone, and rather than find a new long-term squeeze, goes back to just being an intergalactic slut.

I'd be down. I actually prefer Intergalactic Slut Quill.

The MCU is very Hollywood about their heroes. Even characters who are legendary man-hoes like Tony Stark, Peter Quill, and Clint Barton, are all depicted as moving on from the man-ho phase of their lives instantly once their One True Love walks onto the set.

Clint didn't even get to have a man-ho phase.

The man-ho thing annoys me a lot anyway because of the various Double Standards it comes with.

I don’t want man ho Clint

Man ho Clint in the comics is serial sex harasser Clint which he’s apparently still doing in modern times

Huh? He isn't. He's actually had several actual girlfriends, but the problem is that he always seems to sabotage his relationships with them. His most recent was actually Linda Carter, the Night Nurse, which looked like it could work out until he brought home an LMD of himself he stole from SHIELD (he was actually trying to be in two places at once in order to be Hawkeye and Ronin at the same time in order to rip off the Hood without the other superheroes getting pissed at him for things like "stealing from criminals").

The Amazing Spider-Man comic from six months ago (because I'm on unlimited which is limited) has White Rabbit say that Hawkeye is always making passes at her while he's beating her up for doing crimes.

Except when we see Hawkeye actually taking down villains, he doesn't do anything like that.

It does fit behavior patterns he's shown in the past.

Like when he kissed Deathbird against her will after defeating and capturing her.

I'm inclined to believe its feasible. But maybe someone should stop Spencer from character assassinating Hawkeye if that's not supposed to be who he is anymore. His character has been assassinated so much.

The Russo’s didn’t really seem to know what to do with any of the Guardians. Even Rocket essentially just became Thor’s therapist/foil and practically vanished from the plot past that point.

I got the impression that they really just wanted Nebula and Gamora, and we’re kind of meh on everyone else.

Wasn't that, like, thirty years ago? Hawkeye hasn't done that sort of stuff in a while, especially since the Fraction era. Yes, he's a hot mess and is prone to self sabotage and ruining his own relationships and yes, he did once cheat on Spider-Woman with a woman he just met, but he never hits on random villains he's arresting.

...and yes, I know that's a low bar, but still.

Even Rocket essentially just became Thor’s therapist/foil and practically vanished from the plot past that point.
Rocket has a lot to do in Endgame, though. He shows up in way more scenes than even Hawkeye.

The Guardians and Thor were probably my favorite and least favorite parts of both movies. I consistently enjoyed the Thor/Rocket dynamic and Nebula was probably my favorite part of Endgame... but otherwise they were honestly pretty sloppily handled, with Gamora's death and the fact that neither version of her nor Nebula got to land the killing blow on Thanos especially leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

RE: Quill: I'm willing to chalk off his actions in IW and EG as him probably still reeling from killing his own dad, losing Yondu, and feeling insecure about Thor because Thor's a hunk of a hero who's been around longer than he ever was while Quill's just a human space rogue who hasn't been on Earth for years.

I would imagine that once Guardians Vol. 3 comes out, Gunn will re-rail Quill's character development to how it was after Vol. 2, but before IW.

Think of it as akin to how a comic writer adds stuff and when a new one adds bad things, the first one comes back and rectifies the bad things the second one did.

Now he was never married so he hit his girlfriend instead

Equally as bad

Anyway if it was just something Hawkeye did once that’d be one thing. A trivia to mention sometimes about how bad comics could be

But there’s a modern comic where someone claims Hawkeye is still pulling that shit and that’s another thing entirely

It is true that Quill was fresh off losing both his fathers (something he mentions, though in a jackass way in IW).

Losing Gamora probably didn't help either. And even I've admitted that Quill has lost a lot, often through no fault of his own and losing her the way he did probably didn't help.

Disney is holding a launch event for the European version of Disney+ on March 5 revealing new content.

Might we see proper trailers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision then?

Yeah, but you got to understand the person claiming Hawkeye did it was a supervillain that Hawkeye just arrested. So...not exactly the most trustworthy of sources.

Also people in MCU claim again and again that Thor is super duper handsome, which it happen in other Chris roles in fact.

I dont see it, I think bucky is the most handsome but that is just me.

[up][up]But at the same time, we can't exactly ignore it either.

I mean, is it a good idea to say you're a villain, so you're probably lying in that situation.

Note that I don't like the idea of Hawkeye doing that myself, but...

It’s not played for humor. White Rabbit isn’t vindictive about it, just melancholic. And she’s talking only to other supervillain women

So the options are Hawkeye falls back on bad behavior sometimes or women just lie about this stuff lol

The first option isn’t great but the second is much worse
