Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The number of good dads in the MCU can be counted on one hand, and Scott is undeniably within that group.

There's also Hank Pym...who neglected his daughter for most of her life so badly that she helped his former protege steal his company.

Oh, and Carol Danver's father...who was an abusive misogynist who wanted her to Stay in the Kitchen.

The best part is, he doesn't just win by default, but through actual effort.

Be proud Scott....

...wait. Scott might have some competition from Tony...or did. We don't see everything he did, but we can assume from his relationship with Morgan that he was a pretty good dad.

And while not in MCU canon per se, the original Hulk movie featured Brian Banner, who was an insane Mad Scientist who wanted his son's powers. And he was a step up from the original comics Brian Banner.

There's also Ego the Living Planet...who, um, murdered all of his children except Peter whom he tried to use as a battery to kill off the rest of the universe. And killed his mother with a brain tumor. And smashed his Walkman.

There's Howard Stark...who was so neglectful of Tony that Tony grew up doubting if his dad ever loved him.

Scott really is best dad.

Hard-working & he tries to follow the law for the most part. This is especially seen in Ant-Man 2 as he was completely willing to wait out his house arrest with no tricks & had to get forcibly involved in the Pym families schemes because he expressly told them no the 1st time.

It's telling that Scott's closest competition in the "not a shitty dad" competition in the MCU are the neglectful dads.

Yondu was alright, I suppose... other than raising Peter on a ship crewed by dangerous criminals that allegedly wanted to eat him.

Yondu may have been a prick but he died for Quill & that says everything.

Though I hear his actor is an actual prick.

The only thing I heard is like he deliberately avoids taking photos with guys & prefers with women.

I don’t know I think he does it with a visible rudeness.

Jim was also a good step-dad for Cassie too.

I do appreciate how to Ant-Man movies never fell into the "the new step-parent's a douche" route, and him and Scott eventually mended fences with each other.

[up][up]See, I thought you were making a reference to Chris Pratt's behavior or something as opposed to Michael Rooker.

[up]They also didn't try to get Scott back with Margaret. It's made clear that Margaret had good reason to divorce him.

According to GWW, Marvel Studios is developing a Agents of Atlas series as a follow up to Shang-Chi
I would take anything GWW writes with a huge grain of salt. Most of their stuff is mainly rumors.

If not, however, Agents of Atlas would be pretty interesting. They have Jimmy Woo in WandaVision and he could show up again in Agents of Atlas (probably slightly more competent this time) and add in some characters from the comics (both from the first team and the newest team, which is made up of Asian characters).

He's targetting criminal groups that are running rampant taking advantage of the innocent due to societal distress in wake of the Snap, but sure, make it a race thing.

Here's the thing, though: the only criminals we hear him targeting are Mexican drug cartels and Japanese yakuza. Sure, he might have killed some white people, but we never see nor hear of them.

I have to say that the image of a white dude calling himself “Ronin” going to Japan to slaughter Japanese people is.., iffy, to say the least.
