Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] Hmmm. That would be interesting but I hope it's wrong. I hope we get Viv, but in not in the same way.

Speaking of Viv...

The writer of The Vision, Tom King, noticed how MCU!Vision is wearing an outfit taken straight from his story itself.

EDIT: Fixed.

Wrong thread, dude?

Eh, it’s a superhero game, that’s relevant enough.

Tom King must be proud. The MCU is already adapting his acclaimed Vision comic.

Well, influenced by, not directly adapting it given Wanda's greater presence.

My opinion of each series teaser.

I wonder if there will be an explanation as to why Falcon can use the shield in the same way as Cap or it would simply be Charles Atlas Superpower.

The Wanda series looks like it will be fun.

The time cops were somewhat unexpected, but I suppose having them as antagonists of Loki is more interesting than a blonde Yandere (Amora) or an alternative Loki (Lady Loki or Old Loki).

What if Loki isn't on the run from them but actually working for them as a Boxed Crook?

[up][up][up][up]Throwing it to hit things seems like something you can practice, but crazy ricochets feel like only a few could get right. Worse comes to worse, you could add some magnets to the shield so it comes back.

Apologies for the doublepost but would now be a good time to set up individual work pages for these three shows?

As I understand it, in the comics, only a few people have the skill to pull off the crazy ricocheting move Cap does.

Bucky ironically enough is one of them (which makes him not being Cap funny).

The other is Hawkeye (due to...well being Hawkeye and being one of the best marksmen in the Marvel Universe). Unfortunately since he's off doing his own thing, we won't get to see him demonstrate that, so it's another case of missing on out Clint doing cool things and thus people will continue to shit on him, which I will fight with all the power in my soul.

Because he saved the universe with a carny trick, and that was enough.

This skill at ricocheting also means that Cyclops is a good billiards player.

Cyclops should definitely become Captain America at some point.

If only because I'm imagining the tragedy of a mashup costume that evokes the flag but also has x's all over the place and like a half suspender for some reason.

An American flag with a big X over it would also be a bit too close to the Confederate Flag.

Cyclops hates Cap far too much at the moment to even thinking about taking up his mantle. (Not entirely unreasonable I might add. Steve himself admitted multiple times to having done far too little for mutantkind.)

That's no big trick.

You can get Steve to admit to doing too little for any worthy cause. The man holds himself to very high standards

It's a consequence of X-Men being in its own little bubble in the Marvel verse for much of its history.

Which is why it annoys me when writers and fans pull that card. They're blaming the Avengers for something that is entirely the fault of the writers and editors of the X-office.

You don't see the Avengers going, "Where were you when Krang attacked Washington?".
