Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I feel like in an X Men franchise where everything was less Magneto all the time, Mystique would have led her own faction

I don’t think she typically or ever? worked under Magneto in the comics

I do wonder if they will reuse the mutants we have seen in the X-Men films so soon in the MCU. There has been enough exposure to them already and there are plenty of other mutants to play with. Rogue absorbing Carol's power could be interesting (even if I loathe the idea of Carol getting depowered) since that would make her very different from the Rogue in the XMen films (who more or less disappeared after XMen 2 anyway).

I have not had a lot of exposure to America Chavez, apart from Secret Warriors (the cartoon). She was kinda annoying, but OK enough. But I can't wait for Ms Marvel to be introduced or even hinted at.

Most mutants were basically extras in their own movies, so reusing them shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I liked Mystique in First Class, but not the later two. Makes me wonder if it's as much because of Singer's own storytelling issues.

They wanted something more...alien than a blue woman. Then Jennifer Lawrence decided she didn’t like having to put the stuff on (I believe it triggered allergic reactions).

Film Mystique's shifting blue scales are a thing because they wanted Rebecca Romijn to be naked and rolling around on-camera.

A male director's decision to film a naked supermodel for his movie does not warrant an overabundance of contemplation. It's fairly self-explanatory and symptomatic of exactly the problem in Hollywood.

I thought Mystique worked well enough in DOFP, if only because she was technically an antagonist in that film. The whole point of the film was to stop her from executing Trask and the climax is Xavier convincing her to spare him. She's still a morally grey character in that film, who ultimately ends up seeing the light.

It's probably Apocalypse that really turned a lot of people off of Fox's interpretation of Mystique. By that point, she's pretty much a full-fledged hero and it was clear that Lawrence was starting to get tired of playing her again.

To be fair, I'm not entirely well-versed on X-Men lore, so I'm approaching those films as a very casual observer. Long time fans may feel differently than me.

I mean, Mystique's hero run in the films could be seen as a generous interpretation of that time in her career where the Brotherhood worked for the Government and became known as Freedom Force.

I admit I'm being very generous, as even that era in her life wasn't all that heroic, even if she was technically on the side of the angels.

But yeah, screw Hero Mystique. That was dumb, and Fox should throw themselves off cliffs for doing this. This is why Disney now rules the world folks.

I don’t think wanting a villain to have hired goons is that big an ask, I hope. Then again, Lawrence may have rendered Mystique unusually for a good while.

I have no particular interest in seeing Mystique against Marvel

If they hadn't killed her off, Mystique would've been an awesome villain for Natasha.

Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool says that two more Marvel series were greenlit. Please take these with a huge grain of salt, since Johnston tends to report on rumors a lot and his source is "Hollywood players":

  • The first is a Secret Invasion show. I have a little bit of an idea of how this would play out, since Marvel recently published a book called Meet the Skrulls about a family of Skrulls who had secretly infiltrated Earth (like The Americans, basically, only the entire family are alien spies). Although whether or not they would make this film since Captain Marvel and Far From Home films expressly showed the Skrulls as more heroic then their comic counterparts, I don't know.
  • The second one is more of a secret, but stated to be a character from the MCU on the level of Loki. No idea, perhaps War Machine?

I imagine a Secret Invasion-style show about Skrulls who decided to make a home for themselves on Earth could still work as an extension of Captain Marvel's commentary on immigration.

Of course, if it's just a few Skrulls living peacefully in secret among humanity, it's not really an invasion.

I don't really have anything to add, I just feel the need to point out that if the Mystique makeup did actually trigger an allergic reaction, Lawrence was well within her rights to not put it on.

I am currently google searching for a valid reason why other then 'lawl boobies!" I can't find a solid justification just excuses about how her character hates wearing clothes because it interferes with her transforming abilities

I also out of interest googled about just to see how Marvel/Disney handled alien skin colours and Gamora had green face paint too, seems it's a common enough practise, though I don't see Disney going for similar treatment with their version of Mystique thank god

Ironic that while Mystique is typically very clothed in the comics, one of the Gamora's primary outfits there resembles a string bikini.

I found that as a whole female outfits in the MCU tend to be far less Stripperiffic than in the comics. Unless I'm forgetting a glaring example, the worst offenders I can think of were Scarlet Witch with her short skirts and cleavage and Black Widow's skintight catsuit and cleavage.

[up]That’s just practicality. You know how they say “no one would ever wear that in real life”? (Unless you’re a giant green rage monster who can’t find a fitting shirt). Same deal. What works in art doesn’t always work IRL, but as Frank Frazetta said to his critics, that’s the appeal of art.

Mystique is definitely the exception to the rule, but the Fox Men were flat out allergic to the comic costumes.
