Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I wonder if Marvel will take the same approach for the Fantastic Four. They did have two origin stories in the last two decades after all.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.Yeah, I doubt we're going to learn the exact details of Peter's origins.
The thinking behind was probably because we already had two movies dedicated to telling his origin within a decade of each other, and everybody knows it already. One of the biggest complaints about The Amazing Spider Man was that it retreaded a lot of the same ground as the first Raimi film. The MCU probably wanted to avoid that and since Peter was only a supporting character in Civil War, it made sense to skip over that part of his character.
With Homecoming, they probably could've afforded a few nods towards Peter's backstory with Uncle Ben. It probably wouldn't have been necessary, but you could mention how Peter and May are still struggling after his death. No need to go too in-depth, maybe a single conversation between the two would do.
Yosh. Batman is the patron saint of brightly colored child soldiers and the next Batman film should embrace that.
Batman descending on a crime den with his cape open while a kaleidoscopic rainbow of costumed 12-year-olds with foam bats and nerf guns rappel down to deliver doom upon the mafia. Make that happen, DC.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I thought homecoming did have some breadcrumbs about Ben without saying it outright
Civil War too I think
That sounds amazing

Forever liveblogging the AvengersAll of the Marvel Spider-Man films have alluded to his backstory without explicitly showing it, even Far From Home. You know, like they're being written competently or something.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I do wonder exactly how much about Spiderman the average movie goer knows. And by average movie goer, I mean not necessarily someone who would watch superhero movies or even knows anything about comic books, which if what the MCU had been able to attract to some extent.
There is a wide margin between watching Martha Wayne collapse in slow motion and having Peter Parker appear out of nowhere with a single aunt and spider powers with no explanation.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.If you walk into a MCU Phase 3 film having never read a comic book, seen a comic book movie, or heard of any of the characters, you are going to be confused, but I also wonder what kind of alien you are.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"To be fair, children exist. A future fan of something is born every day, and every MCU movie is somebody's first MCU movie.
But for real, characters like Spider-Man and Batman are so media exposed that even if Spider-Man: Homecoming is legit your first-ever exposure to the character of Spider-Man, the film still gives you a lot to work with in your understanding of the character even without an origin story.
And if you really need an origin story, there are approximately fifty million Spider-Man adaptations on the market you can seek out. Also, like, you probably have parents?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Spider-Girl never. After witnessing Tobey Maguire's performance, Spider-Man sold his marriage to the devil in a pact to always remain a teenager in Spider-Man products forevermore.
Mephisto taunted Spidey with the image of a little girl that would never exist because of this decision. Contrary to popular belief, this little girl was not Mayday Parker from the MC2 continuity. She was, however, holding MC2's film rights when she faded out of existence forever.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Isn't this a bit of Fan Myopia?
The success of the MCU films mean that there are a lot of people with little to no knowledge of comic books who went to see these movies. And their success also means that Marvel managed to avoid abusing of the All There in the Manual.
For instance, I wonder if Spiderman's origin story will be just as known in ten or twenty years.

Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.Spider-Man has been one of the most popular superheroes since waaaaay before the MCU was a glint in Kevin Feige's eyes, who also hadn't been born yet.
Spider-Man, Batman and Superman are so ubiquitous that even if you have never cracked open a comic book in your life, you still at least have an idea of what their deal is.

Regaring the airport battle, yeah, Bucky did throw that giant whatever thing at or slightly above Peter's head, and I intentionally undersold that because it and Scott throwing the "water truck" were the notable exceptions to Team Cap's pulling their punches. Hell, at most points, Clint and Sam were literally shooting around Team Stank.
One thing that got to me about Civil War was that Peter's stated reason for being a hero is almost identical to the argument Steve and Sam were proposing at the start. And Tony knew this, and lied to Peter, by buttering him up, blackmailing him, and telling him the whole "Cap thinks he's right" thing.

The next Batman movie should have him adopt an entire orphanage and then teach them to fight
That’s what people like about Batman, right? His serial adopting?
