Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I freaking love Ultron, as y’all can see from my profile pic.

Ultron being an emotional robotman-baby/drama queen rather than the old cliched “cold calculated AI” character is spot-on from the comics and I loved him for it.

I really love Age of Ultron, significantly more so than most other people here, and a big part of that is Ultron's fantastic characterization.

Up until The Reveal right? That's what you meant right? Cause I admit there's a lot to like about three, but god that reveal just ruins everything.

I also liked Ultron

Excellent. Now let us riot against all the haters. It's the only logical thing to do.

I got the Iron Man 3 reveal spoiled to me right here, on the TV Tropes forum before I went to see it :/

I wonder if I would have felt differently had I not known it in advance.

No. I mean what I said

Guy Manning was boring but I loved the reveal of Trevor

And even with Guy Person being boring the final battle with all the suits vs extremis peeps was chaotic fun and Pepper got to blow up the bad guy for being a creeper

Really if you mute the sound whenever Guy Dude is talking the movie gets so much better

And I already like it quite a bit

Ok. That's a fair way to look at it.

House Party was great.

Still hate that reveal.

Pretty much. I too thought the Mandarin reveal was good and brilliant, but that Guy Bloke was a rather poor replacement.

I found the Trevor reveal hilarious. That and the stinger were about the only things I liked about the movie, but I liked them enough that it’s in the mid-tier of MCU movies for me.

I remember when Iron Man 3 came out, I heard people were disappointed with how the Mandarin turned, but didn't know the full details.

I watched the film and I wasn't sure why some people didn't like it. It wasn't as intense as the trailers made it seem, but it was fine otherwise. With how much screentime Killian had, I thought the reason people were upset was that the Mandarin was going to be a secondary villain he was manipulating and Tony wasn't even going to fight him.

Then Ben Kingsley walked out of the bathroom after taking a shit and it started falling into place for me. I thought it was funny, but I completely understood where people were coming from.

Overall, I thought the twist was a clever idea, it just wasn't executed to its full potential. Typically, this type of reveal works best when the real mastermind is just as an engaging character as the one they're replacing. And Killian really wasn't.

But hey, we're getting the Mandarin proper in Shang-Chi. So maybe we might look on the twist in Iron Man 3 differently once that comes out. At the very least, it'd be funny if we get a cameo from Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor. Have him in the Ten Ring's custody and chatting up with Shang-Chi about how he pissed the real Mandarin off with his stunt.

I liked Iron Man 3’s Reality Ensues sense of humor. It just needed better follow up on a lot of plot points.

I love Iron Man 3's twist. And it makes total sense, too — a wealthy businessman manufactures a war with a Middle Eastern terrorist (which he created) in order to make money.

I do wonder if the new director for DS 2 will push for less horror for more comedy in visiting other universes. I wouldn't be surprised if there are reshoots that change the tone of the movie to match the new possible vision as well.

Ultron, a more fleshed-out Hawkeye, Vision, and Scarlet Witch were the best parts of Age of Ultron. It's bogged down by the random Bruce/Natasha ship and a Quicksilver that just so happens to have a vastly superior version in the Fox-verse.

The legend has returned.

On the other hand, Fox Quicksilver was so powerful that he had to be shoved out of the story or destroy all tension.

MCU Quicksilver did a better job at that.

So Marvel loses another innovative director, huh? Shame. Doctor Strange was different visually and thematically. I'm guessing Marvel didn't like it being that way.

I wouldn't say Derrickson was that innovative. Nice visuals here and there and creative climax, otherwise kind of par the course.

I've seen the take that this happened because Disney didn't want it to be different several times and I'm just like... we wouldn't have gotten Thor Ragnarok or Guardians of the Galaxy if that were really the case.

This song needs more love.

I mean, one of the main complaints of the first Doctor Strange film was that it was too similar to other MCU films in terms of its story arc.

Granted, I do see where you're coming from. Doctor Strange did have themes about accepting one's own failures, and how the only way to reach one's full potential was to learn and grow from their losses in life. The inevitability of time moving ahead and how the precious moments we have while we're alive matter all the more because of it.

I do think Doctor Strange does have a bit more complexity in its themes then people give it credit for, even if it's not my favorite Phase Three film.

Most of the complaints about Doctor Strange being very familiar and by-the-book for Marvel come from the script, not the directing.

I am fine with Doctor Strange. The story is not overly original, but the FX are way cool and the story has the balance of humour, action and drama that suits my tastes. Then again, I was not very familiar with the comic book character. On a meta-level though, I wondered if Benedict Cumberbatch was going to be pigeonholed to roles of an Insufferable Genius who may or may not learn some does of humility (yes, I know he has had other roles since).

And maybe I'm in the minority here, but I have to say that Iron Man 3 is one of my favourite MCU movies (though it's really hard for me to establish a precise ranking). I didn't mind the reveal at all (especially if we are to get a real Mandarin later), and actually found it was even more effective with me expecting it to be the real deal. And it has Tony building weapons out of garden tools and above all Pepper kicking ass (which by the way made me wonder how much Extremis affects the psyche of its users).

Conversely, after binge watching all the MCU movies during the holidays, I have to confess that Avengers: Age of Ultron is definitely my less favourite of the lot. I mean, Ultron is interesting, but the movie simply felt boring to me.

I mean, there wouldn't need to be reshoots as there haven't been any...shoots yet anyway. Filming hasn't started yet.

[up] Yeah, I did a bit of digging and it seems that shooting is scheduled to start on May 4th.

That still gives them a little bit of time to find another director.

It's an unfortunate situation certainly, but these sorts of things can happen from time to time.
