Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

For those that need a crash course on S.W.O.R.D.:

The Sentient World Observation and Response Department (S.W.O.R.D.) is basically the space version of S.H.I.E.L.D. While S.H.I.E.L.D. dealt with counterterrorism and intelligence on Earth, S.W.O.R.D. dealt with that on a galactic level. So it's like the Marvel version of the Men in Black.

S.W.O.R.D. was planned to have been alluded to as far back as the first Thor movie, but since the organization was established in an X-Men comic, namely issue #6 of Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men vol. 3, not to mention a big chunk of known agents were mutants like Lockheed, Beast and S.W.O.R.D. Commander Abigail Brand, it meant it was basically Fox's to mess around with...but since Fox was Fox, they obviously never did anything with it. Because it's Fox.

Spider-Man: Far From Home alluded to S.W.O.R.D. by having (the real) Nick Fury hanging out with Skrulls in space, but it looks like WandaVision is having the organization get established for realsies, which gives it the distinction of being the first Fox-owned Marvel thing to be established in the MCU (sorry Deadpool fans).

I'm reckoning that S.W.O.R.D. will basically be what S.H.I.E.L.D. would've been if it wasn't infiltrated from within by HYDRA and expanded its scope to the cosmos, which works on a lot of levels since after the Thanos incident, Fury will be wanting to have a more proactive unit ready for the next butthole that tries to wreck the universe.

I approve. [tup]

EDIT: O hai Monica Rambeau.

I might be reading too much into things, since a gray pantsuit is pretty normal business attire, but the color scheme of adult!Monica's clothing seems (IMO) to cleverly invoke her superhero costume.

Also, nice casting. She definitely looks like the adult version of kid!Monica from Captain Marvel.

Forget "where's Carol so she can immediately one-shot the Big Bad", now it's gonna be "where's Monica so she can immediately fry the Big Bad's brain at the speed of light". [lol]

I wonder if Monica was involved with SHIELD before all the shit went down. Like, if she became a SHIELD trainee because she wanted to get closer to the organization that had the only ties to Carol, or looked up to Fury, or something, and was there went the HYDRA crap happened.

Based on my vague knowledge of Monica’s personality in the comics and supposition that they would do something different than Sam and Sharon’s relationships with Steve or Kamala’s relationship with Carol, I’m guessing Monica might be pretty cynical and not on the best terms with Carol in the present.

I have to ask, does steve and tony have more villians in their rouge gallery? because since the two are gone, better they could resue to other hero, like falcon and winter soldier or give tony remaning villan to spiderman for example.

[up][up] Yes, they have some bad guys left that others could use.

I could've sworn MODOK was an enemy of theirs as well, but I'm not sure how they could work him into the MCU.

And hey, since S.W.O.R.D. is happening, who's your pick to play S.W.O.R.D. Commander Abigail Brand?

[up]MODOK was supposed to get his own Hulu cartoon, but that whole enterprise is in question after Tigra and Dazzler was trashed and they were told to start from scratch.

I could see MODOK working against Captain Marvel, given how much her backstory leans into the super-science angle. One of my theories for how Captain Marvel 2 will go involves an organization trying to recreate the incident that gave Carol powers, and control it for their own ends, and if that turns out to be a terrestrial organization then AIM would be perfect.

On the other hand, she's not specifically dedicated to super-science the way a character like Iron Man is, so maybe the best use of him would probably be in a team-up title, though. Like, if the real AIM shows up in an individual character's movie with Monica Rappaccini (the Scientist Supreme) as the Big Bad, and then it leads into them creating MODOK who fights the group.

Then again, I figured something similar could happen for DOOM. Start with Lucia Von Bardas, and save DOOM for the end of that storyline.

MCU Thor and Captain Marvel compete in a triathlon against DCEU Superman and Wonder Woman.

DC wins because Thor's pansy weakling ass holds Carol back.

Just a few things: in Bv S we see Clark moving a ship with ease so that should count more in strenght than doomsday, isnt? and second doomsday is more powerfull that zod(I mean is pretty much Zod on crack) so Diana should a least take double of it.

Anyway I was smiling when the meteror destroy earth, that was funny.

We don't really know how strong Doomsday was nor how heavy the ship was. But it doesn't really matter, because the answer to "Who would win?" is always "Whomever the writer wants to win."

Yes and no, cinematic universe does have limits, some more hard than others but they have it, because you cant use the sheer wonkiness of comic books and good reasons.

Nope, whomever the writer wants to win will win. It doesn't matter the power levels and there are no "limits" or whatever.

This is also true in the cinematic versions. Why doesn't Doctor Strange just use the Time Stone on Thanos? Because the writers want Thanos to win. Why does Doomsday just stand in one spot in Gotham instead of tearing all over the city like Zod? Because the writers don't want collateral damage.

In short, whatever "limits" there are, if the writer wants a person to win, they'll come up with a way for that person to go around those limits and claim victory. The problem here is how to do it in a way that's believable, if not just acceptable, for the audience.

This may sound pretentious but that's pretty much the main trick of writing: how to disguise the writer's reasons for a event happening with the character's reasons for a event happening. Watson is the puppet that Doyle makes move and the curtain that Doyle hides behinds while he operates the show.
