Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] Find some new planet then. He had thousands of years.

[up] Practically the first thing we see him do; in response to the Frost Giants attacking Earth, he led a counter-attack that turned into an invasion of their world, where he stole the Casket of Ancient Winters and their heir. And while the heir might not have had much value to them, it was stated that Jotunheim was dying without the Casket.

As brutal as a warlord as he may have been it’s ridiculous for him to just completely uproot his people in a quest to find some random habitable planet that could take who knows how long. No one, not his generals nor any of his civilians would agree to something so insane just to date his own guilt.

I can imagine Odin felt shame for his past & that’s why he covered it up. It wasn’t the right choice but I can understand why he did it especially if he decided to become the realms protector to make up for it.

He could have gone looking for a suitable planet, and only destroyed Asgard after he had found one, decreed that it would be their new homeland, and successfully moved everyone there. Again, he had over a thousand years. Plenty of time to find the perfect new home and make the transition smooth. And that's just assuming that destroying Asgard was the only way to stop Hela for good. He could also have spent the time trying to find an alternative way of depowering or killing her, or building up defenses against her and warning his successors of her well in advance. He didn't do any of that. He did nothing to prepare for Hela's release when he died, he concealed her existence so that nobody else even knew she was a threat, and only warned his sons about her when he was minutes away from death.

I don't doubt that he had a change of heart, I just don't think it was all that big a change of heart or should count as redemptive. He stopped actively conquering and enslaving, but even his more benevolent "protector of the realms" set-up involved a strict hierarchy with him and Asgard firmly on top and everyone else underneath, and certain races designated as always dangerous enemies who could be slaughtered and robbed if he felt they'd provoked him.

Again uplifting his entire nation just to sate his own guilt complex is pretty impractical.

None of his people would agree to such a thing unless they were forced to.

Thor did that after other options of defeating Hela were exhausted.

Something worth noting is that Hela is only at full power while on Asgard. And if Loki hadn't been shortsighted enough to order the Bifrost open (or if the guy operating the Bifrost had still been the nigh-omniscient Heimdall), Hela would have had no immediate way to return to Asgard from Earth.

So Odin's plan may have been to run out the clock on Earth, knowing at least one of the local superheroes (Dr. Strange) is aware of his location and situation, and can thus rally Earth's Mightiest Heroes to deal with Hela while she's far from her seat of power.

There is a similar discussion in the Frozen thread. Basically, making amends for warmongering is not as simple as returning physical goods, and dismantling the society you built from it just for "moral equilibrium" will only cause more harm. If anything, what Odin did do was the first step. He shut down the war machine (Hela) and then declared the conquered territories under Asgards protection. That meant the other realms ended up benefitting from the wealth of Asgard in some way, and there was no indication that those realms were taxed or bullied by the parent state (beyond those starting trouble), allowing them to recover and flourish on their own.

Huh? When was it ever stated that Jotunheim was dying without the Casket? I don't remember that at all. And the Casket was in Odin's trophy room for, like, a thousand years.

In a totally unrelated thing, I talk to my girlfriend about Marvel netflix and taking about jessica jones and killgrave and she was

GF:"so, he is call the purple man, isnt the guy who kill children and stuff in animatronics?"

Me:"Nononononon, you are taking about the other purple guy, this one is a mind controling rapist"

GF:"What is with purple people? child murder, rapist, half of the universe genociders....is being purple mean you are evil?"

Me:"the hell if I know".

Maybe that is why hawkeye dosent have is suit, that would single him as evil.

It's a good thing there's a creature which feeds on them: The one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple-people eater. Introduce one of those into an environment, and child rapists and serial killers will no longer be a problem.

Hold up: I thought it was a purple people eater and not a purple people eater. Like, it was itself purple and not that it ate purple people.

So...does anyone recall Carol using any proton blasts during the final battle of Infinity War?

Because I don't. And you guys remember what she said to Fury about Skrulls and Proton Blasts right?

And thanks to FFH, we know Skrulls are replacing people on Earth (or at least it looks like that), even if it's only Nick Fury right now?

....hmmm....
