Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Taskmaster is almost certainly Hawkeye
He most certainly isn't. Also, isn't this the period in time in which Hawkeye was under house arrest?

Little details in the BW trailer. Holy shit there's a Guitar Hero drum kit in Yelena's place or whatever.

Oh yeah, I saw the trailer. It's alright. Probably/hopefully saving the really, really good stuff for later or the actual movie. Don't care for Taskmaster's look but I DO like David Harbour in the Red Guardian suit, he just looks gloriously comic-book-y. Keeping my expectations not too high, not too low.

David Harbour, Florence Pugh, and Rachel Weisz are entirely my reasons for seeing this movie.

I'm wouldn't say this looks any worse or any better than most other MCU trailers.

What were the general thoughts on Captain Marvel's trailer?

I think some people criticized the tagline. I recall some hay about that.

I generally quit caring about trailers before long and especially after the movie is out.

[up][up] I do admit I groaned a bit at that part.

I was in a funny position when Captain Marvel came out. I fell under the banner of people calling me sexist for thinking Carol is overpowered. They seemed to underestimate that I'm an insufferable bastard who struggles to like ANY powerful good character. They should've seen how much I complained about Levi in Attack on Titan.

That's kind of the problem with those people, they poison the discussion and force people to have to delicately dance around the conversation in order to be understood and make it more difficult to take people in good faith.

I admit the "discover what makes her a hero" bit is on-the-nose but it wasn't a dealbreaker.

Man, I didn't even know who Red Guardian was until this trailer.

For those who don't know the character's comic history like me he was basically the Russian equivalent to Captain America during WWII, a Chummy Commie named Aleksey Lebedev who even worked alongside Cap on a couple secret missions.

So became of this noble hero? Unceremoniously executed in a political purge for opposing the unethical super-soldier experiments used to create his gritty anti-heroic successor: Alexei Shostakov, Black Widow's ex-husband.

Then he died protecting Captain America from a Chinese agent. And inexplicably came back in a 2010 comic as the latest version of Ronin. And was then forgotten about until now. There have apparently been several other people who held the title but they all have like, single-paragraph biographies on the Marvel wiki at best.

Oh yeah. Lots of countries took a look at Captain America and thought, "We got to get one of those." Russia had Red Guardian, Britain had, well, Captain Britain, Canada had Guardian/Vindicator, and Ireland had Shamrock.

I should stress that I mean he was a Captain America equivalent in-universe. There were no Soviet comic books starring the Red Guardian, cool as that might have been.

Hopefully she sticks around, as I’m to understand in the comics she was the main BW for a while (until Natasha came back from where ever was. Hell, I guessing).
Uh, no. Yelena was never the replacement for Black Widow. She was actually another spy/assassin that had been trained by the Red Room whom had been given the name "Black Widow" by them, since Natasha had defected to the Avengers. In fact, Black Widow's first solo mini-series had Yelena as the villain against Natasha (it was also the first comic which named the "Red Room" as the place where Natasha was trained). Yelena herself was never really a hero, although she did move from villain to, uh, uneasy ally, I guess. And then back to villain and then dead and then cloned and then cloned and dead.

Comics, man.
