Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

A highlight of a conference I went to a few years ago was hearing Scott McCloud lament that movie Apocalypse wasn’t so “apocalyptic”.

Is there anything that Apocalypse offers that would actually make him better than other X Men antagonists for a movie?

Anyone know if they already confirmed the Taskmaster actor.?

I hope he is someone not very famous (List B or List C), because if is someone very famous, it means that most of the film he will be without the helmet.

Just like the Goblin slayer or the Mandalorian.

Well, he's kinda has a thing for making mutants more powerful (his horsemen of the Apocalypse and all that).

You could have him enact a variation of his plan in X-Men: Evolution, where he was going to artificially activate the X gene in everyone on earth and then enact his usual Survival of the fittest ideas and have whoever's left fight it out until the strongest among mutant kind remain.

Yeah, it's similar to [[Film/Xmen Magneto's plan in the first movie]], but unlike Eric, our boy Poxy knew full well that triggering the X gene in baseline humans would kill a large amount of them...because again, Social Darwinist.

You could connect him to a lot of classic X-tropes, like Mutant Growth Hormone and Weapon X, and of course, you gotta have the Horsemen as his own attempts at making mutants stronger. Maybe have him be the first to recognize that all humans have the X gene (even if it's dormant among a large number of them) and that his plan is to improve humanity to strengthen them for future threats ala Ultron...though referencing Ultron might be pretty dangerous.

Apocalypse was only a good antagonist in the Age of Apocalypse. Other than that, the best comics with him are the ones where he is an uneasy ally, rather than a full blown villain. Much like Magneto, actually, although Magneto was always better as a straight up anti-hero.

I have doubts how well a Bad Future can be effectively conveyed without a lot of buildup to establish a contrast.

I never said it should be adapted, only that he was a good villain in it.

Fair enough.

I was just thinking because of how many X-Men stories are reliant on Bad Future

A lot. To be fair, most of them stem from the X-Men's original Bad Future, "Days of Future Past," which was pretty great storytelling.

No. We don't know who's playing Taskmaster. Incidentally, The Mandalorian is played by Pedro Pascal who was in Game of Thrones and Narcos and ergo, is rather famous.

Just because someone's famous doesn't mean they won't have a helmet on. Just look at Karl Urban in Dredd.

It’s rare, though. One of the primary reasons so few MCU characters go open faced often is because actors - especially famous ones - tend to want their faces to be seen.

Outside the MCU, it’s the reason Dr. Doom gets so little screentime in the iconic mask as well.

To be honest, I never really found Apocalypse all that interesting. Plenty of better (in my subjective opinion) villains to explore.

In the words of one Jedi Master: "Impressive. Every word in that sentence was wrong." He isn't a killer robot and he isn't from the future. Even in the cartoon, he isn't those things. This is Apocalypse from the cartoon.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Nimrod? He's the only killer robot from the future that the cartoon had.
