Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Yeah, the film is overshadowed by the "Killian: Does He Suck?" argument, but there is actually a lot to like in Iron Man 3. For me, personally, the House Party Protocol is one of my favorite action sequences in the MCU.
"The hero or villain activates LITERALLY ALL OF THE IRON MANS AT ONCE" is a very popular idea in the comics. So popular that basically every writer who has ever written Tony Stark, whether in his solo comic or an Avengers one, has done that at least once. Writers love bringing the whole armory to life to either fight a villain or fight the heroes. Because it's really f*cking cool.
So seeing it happen on the big screen is one of those things that we really, desperately needed to see happen before Iron Man leaves the franchise. And Iron Man 3 delivered in a really cool blowout action scene.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yeah. Even though Iron Man 3 is the only MCU movie I hate (the other contenders, The Dark World, Incredible Hulk and Age of Ultron don't even dent me), I agree it had some spectacular ideas, and executed a lot of them well.
Even the thing with Killian was good idea, just poorly executed (and with the wrong person). But that reveal about the Mandarin....damn, did that put a knife in the entire movie for me.
One Strip! One Strip! For me it's not just the Mandarin twist. The resolution to Tony's PTSD (the most compelling part of the movie) is underwhelming, and between that and the Mandarin twist the third act just collapses as the movie becomes completely devoid of things to care about.

PTSD is one of those themes that (obviously) don't work well in a wacky film.
And Iron Man 3 was probably THE most humorous film out of the trilogy, in spite of what the trailes showed.

Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianThey couldn't have known it at the time but honestly, through the benefit of hindsight, it may actually have been better to not address and "resolve" Tony's PTSD.
Tony being shell-shocked about Thanos, the extraterrestrial threat that could be coming for Earth any day now and about whom we literally know nothing about, feeds very well into his roles in Age of Ultron, Civil War, and ultimately Infinity War and Endgame.
Tony has a very strong character arc ripe for the plucking, but somewhat marred by the fact that many steps along that journey weren't supposed to be steps along that specific journey.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.IM 3 doesn’t really resolve it.
Tony finds a way to help manage it and decides to seek help after the movie
And then since he decided to only confide in Bruce, not at all a therapist, he doesn’t really get better and his coping strategy starts driving Pepper away
It was a stopgap that worked for exactly one movie
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWithin the context of the movie, "Just build something" is the magical cure-all for Tony's PTSD. He immediately gets better and stops suffering any and all symptoms for the duration of the film.
Age of Ultron then uses Wanda's magical mind-f*ckery to revive Tony's freaked-out trauma for the same reason Tony still has an arsenal of Iron Man suits despite blowing all of his suits up at the end of Iron Man 3. 3 tried to provide an ending for a character that was not, by any means, ready to leave the franchise yet, and subsequent films consequentially went, "Yeah, no, forget everything that guy just said."

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I mean I took the Bruce stinger to indicate that Tony very much wasn’t better, despite it being played as a joke
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIs not only a iron man 3 problem, IM 2 have tony deal with is daddy issues or a least not being burdern by it, which it would ruin the emocional payoff of civil war.
Iron man does improve is on trilogy and the avenger movie pull him back HARD into a mess and a train wreck, looking tony at the end saying that he is not the armor to pretty much trying to lock the world into one is.....heartbreaking.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Yeah TWS was actually the film that got me interested in the MCU again after IM 3 made me lose interest.
I only saw WS in full this year and it doesn't quite make my top 5 (doesn't help that I'd long spoiled the HYDRA twist for myself), but even I can agree it's a great time, and certainly one of the two much-needed kicks up the asshole for the MCU that year, alongside Guardians of course. Hard not to like.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The party scene is hilarious. Add on Ultron’s entrance and the reference that comes back around in Endgame. That bit of Ao T is a very, very high point for the whole MCU.
“If you have a message for the devil give it to me and I’ll take it to him.”I still like his final discussion with Vision too.
Mostly for the I was just born yesterday line.
One Strip! One Strip!Their convo at the end is neat. Otherwise I can't comment, I haven't sat and watched Ao U since it was in theaters. Now that my folks got Disney+, maybe I'll look and see what's what on there.

Honestly, I think Loki's storyline in The Dark World is so good that it's worth watching the movie for, if even just for that. There's not a lot great in that movie, but there are a few things here and there.
