Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It's very amusing that, despite his "best efforts," Odin ended up having to banish and/or imprison all three of his kids.

Like, not the best parent, is all I'm saying.

Not that the MCU is chock full of great parents. There's... what... May? Hawkeye and Laura, I guess?

The MCU loves its use of Mentor Occupational Hazard. Fitting for a Disney property.

I wish IM 3 had made this kid someone with connections to the comics like maybe Riri Williams. That cameo in Endgame is probably it for his relevance. Which is a shame.

Oh, right. Scott. Gotta apologize to him, given that he's one of my favorite characters in the entire series.

Probably not but I really hope we see Ironheart or Iron Lad or someone take up Stark’s legacy.

Terrible decisions with his technology aside, Tony appears to have been an excellent dad to Morgan. And as far as we know of didn't cause any more near-world-ending disasters during the years raising her.

Basically every Phase 3 movie until A Mat W showcased the questionable actions of fathers/father figures, then A Mat W finally showed us an actually good dad in Scott Lang again.

Regarding whether to watch Dark World or not, if your main concern is about the plot, you can skip it, as the parts of Dark World that are important to future movies can be summed up in a handful of bullet points:

  • Jane becomes host to an object called the Aether which turns out to be the Reality Stone and is given to the Collector from the Guardians of the Galaxy film; little is actually done with it in this film
  • Thor's mother Frigga is killed in a Dark Elf attack, which does eventually come back but not in Ragnarok
  • Loki fakes a Heroic Sacrifice so he can pose as Odin, telling Thor to go live his life out in the world while he rules in disguise

And that's about it.

Scott was a loving dad, but Cassie's mom Margaret was perfectly justified in wanting to keep them apart until Scott got his shit together.

[up][up][up] Actually in the second movie he was clearly against going along with Hank & Hope's plans but was forced into it regardless through a combo of kid-napping & guilt-tripping.

And the moment he thought he didn't have to do anymore he immediately went back home to live out the last remaining hours of his sentence.

[up][up] So basically all stuff I still remember.

Also Scott’s a decent guy. The worst delinquency you can level against him is white collar crime. And he paid his dues in regard to that.

When your asked to help a fellow superhero & be apart of a team-up, its quite impolite to say no.

[up][up][up][up]Well, he did commit breaking and entering with the intent to steal money into someone's house, which is what landed him in jail the second time. That's not white-collar crime.

Though this is also kind of Hank's fault too since he arranged it all to bring Scott into his plans.

Hank Pym is an asshole, is what I'm getting at here.

That depends on how unpopular Cap became after he went fugitive.

Cause helping Captain America at the risk of his own livelihood might earn big sympathy points depending on the person.

So it most likely be a mix of people thinking he did wrong & people cheering for him. Hell people sympathizing with him for helping Cap may be why he got such a lenient sentence in the first place.

Committing a crime knowing full well you could get arrested and locked up away from your family for a long time is pretty bad parenting.

Scott did that twice.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
