Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

We had people on this forum before the film came out insisting that because this was an adaptation, Mysterio probably really was a superhero from a parallel dimension, and would thus establish the existence of the Multiverse in this film.
So apparently it was a shocking twist.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Apparently, people thought there was no way they would really have Mysterio be evil all along, since it would be such an obvious twist, since he's a villain in the comics. Of course, I then pointed out that the same reveal with Ego was Played for Drama, and they pulled it off great, and look what they ended up doing.
Granted, they did add to the twist by making the "how" part a secondary twist in that Mysterio is a fabrication of a bunch of disgruntled former Stark employees, and that was a really smart move.
A lot of twists in adaptations are obvious when you know the source material.
Like. You can watch Fellowship of the Ring expecting that Gandalf will be Killed Off for Real since his survival and reappearance as Gandalf the White is so well-known to audiences that clearly they'll do something different to be surprising to everyone that's read the book.
But you'll be disappointed. Because adaptations are not designed to be wacky What If AU stories. They're designed to tell the same story through a new medium.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. It's once again worth pointing out that the large majority of the MCU audience is not familiar with the comics. Mysterio being a villain is obvious to anybody who's read a comic featuring him, but for the majority of the casual public he was completely new. That's why the movies don't fuss too much about changing things from the comics like Thanos being obsessed with Death or Civil War's bad reputation.
Honestly, it would've been a bigger twist if Mysterio was a genuine good guy the whole film. Maybe he could still use illusions to fool the Elementals, but he's still trying to stop them and save the world.
Then have The Stinger reveal that Mysterio was an asshole the whole time and backstab Peter so he could hog all the glory for himself. Fool fans of the character into thinking he's genuinely undergone Adaptational Heroism for most of the story, only to to reveal the truth at the literal last second.

My point isn't that Tony was wrong to do so.
My point is that it's yet another movie that revolves around something Tony Stark did. Even when it's not an Iron Man or even an Avengers movie.
It's supposed to be a Spider-Man movie.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThat's why Tony Stark is the greatest villain of the MCU. Even when dead, his evil still reigns.
One Strip! One Strip!Mysterio was pretty obvious.
My only theory regarding the film that wound up being wrong was that while I was correct that the Elementals would be CGI illusions, I thought they'd be portrayed by, like, Flint Marko, Morris Bench, ect. in mo-cap suits in Mysterio's lair rather than their movements being purely computer-generated.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!![]()

Well, Stark Industries is easier to connect the world of Spider-Man to the world of the MCU. I suspect, however, that if Stark Industries isn't around, it'll be Oscorp that'll be responsible for all of Spidey's Rogues Gallery. That was true in the Amazing Spider-Man continuity, Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon, and the PS 4 Spiderman-verse. And if it's not Oscorp, then Alchemax.
Autumn Durald is on board for the Loki miniseries.

Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)Nah. Bringing the actual Sandman, Hydro-Man, and Molten Man in like that would have necessitated explanations for the audience as to who each of these characters are and why they're elemental constructs. That's a lot of explaining for what ultimately amounts to a cameo appearance.
Far From Home did it right in that regard. The visual reference to those villains is there for comic readers to pick up and go, "Ahh, I see what you did there." But they're not actually those characters. They have a conjoined fake origin story tied directly into Mysterio's fake origin story, since he's the actual focus for the conflict.
