Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

To be fair with America, being at least a little abrasive is just part of her character - you'd need a bit of that if you want to portray her. But I agree that it shouldn't be taken too far.
Also, I must agree that one bad solo series doesn't make her some incredibly toxic character. I swear, some people act like they've never seen a bad solo run before.
Oh God! Natural light!![]()
Isn't that basically the comic that codified the he's the Date Rape superhero attitude people have towards him that haunts him to this day like he was Aquaman talking to fish?
Though I suppose you're right that maybe a good story could help him.
One Strip! One Strip!
It could actually be interesting, someone who doesn’t want to have this effect being accused of it, and maybe it does help him.

I dunno, I feel she crosses the like to Jerkass way too often, and that’s not who I want as the first representative.
I honestly expect Marvel's going to adapt America at some point given she's been fairly prominent with Rising, but probably just in a team role like Rocket or Hulk unless she gets more material. A character with the power to travel the Multiverse has a lot of story potential, but she's only had a handful of arcs while her peers like Kamala and Kate have had dozens.

Beatman 1, not to be rude, but I'm dead sure we've done this song and dance before.
Not only we have seen more options for Latino characters being done well (Robbie, Miles) so it's not like she'll be the only Latino character that'll get wide recognition to the non-comics going audience, she's had, what, one bad solo run?
And if even you don't like her too much outside of that run, guess what? An adaptation can make her more palatable.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.
I’m gonna drop it at this point lest it get repetitive.
Miles though, he’s caught in the web (pardon the pun) of Sony, who seem likely to take their ball and head home as soon as it’s convenient. (I mean any live action version of the character).
x5 - I’m fully expecting Kamala sooner rather than later considering she’s front and center in the Square Enix made Avengers game being developed.

"It's not his fault that his superpowers are rapey. He doesn't mean to be a walking violation of consent."
Yeah. I. Uh. There are some stories that are hard to do well, and then there are the ones where there isn't a "done well" option. That, right there? That might actually be the worst possible way to introduce a character.

America's first appearance was in Vengeance, but she acts so unlike her current selfnote that one should ignore it. I recommend starting with Gillen and McKelvie's Young Avengers (2013), as that's where her modern self comes in.
After that, Secret Wars: Siege where her and Kate Bishop being BFFs became official, then Al Ewing's The Ultimates and Ultimates2, West Coast Avengers, and her short story in Marvel #1000 as well. After that America's mostly appeared in Marvel Rising, but that's in a different continuity.

The point is that the Kilgrave thing is the elephant in the room when introducing a character like Starfox. You don't want your audience thinking about the horrifying implications of his powerset. That is a conversation that leads into "Why the f*ck would you even design a character like this?" and there is no good answer to that.
Consequentially, the worst thing to do with such a character is to shine a big ol' spotlight on the problem and go, "HAY. HAY GUYZ. I made a BIG OL' RAPEY guy. He's a superhero, and his powers are SUPER RAPEY. I call him ROOFIE MAN."
The best thing you can do with a character like Star Fox is to just stay the f*ck away from that whole topic. Watson, as a rule, should avoid starting arguments that Doyle can't win.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.@fredhot: I'd say Kieron Gillen's Young Avengers run. She appeared beforehand, but I don't think anyone really cares about that appearance, and it's Gillen's run that really defined her, if I recall correctly (also, Young Avengers is pretty cool in general).
After that, she appeared in Al Ewing's Ultimates run, which is also great. Then there's the America solo series, which has been mentioned is not held in especially high regard. I suppose you could check it out if you're curious, though.
Edit: Ah,
'd. Forgot about her appearance in Siege, though - definitely read that too, and all that other stuff Tucker mentioned. Also, one of those Civil War II miniseries had a decent Kate and America story in reaction to Rhodey's death - forget what it was called, though.

Oh God! Natural light! It was Civil War II: Choosing Sides, and yeah, their short in that one was pretty cute. Same author also put up an unpublished script
where they actually began dating. Shame Marvel cut it.
For any other minor appearances, America has a funny role in the last arc of Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat, and another short with Kate in Secret Wars Too.

My actor choice for America would actually be Camila Mendes
, who is surprisingly great in Riverdale.
I’m goofing about Endgame’s time travel
That said, someone should edit in the Endgame bits into the movies they zip back to
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI also watched the Dora movie, and liked it. The two lead teen actresses were really good. The two male ones were nice, too. And Michael Peña is of course always a win.
And having read solely Ultimates, I think America Chavez is cool, too.

Speaking of Sophia Di Martino.
I am sure that Sophia Di Martino will not be Amora.
Most likely, they want to save her for Thor 4 (As Big Bad)
Theory:
Lady Loki is "our" Loki with a new body after dying at the hands of Thanos.

Hell, if they'd wanted to, they probably could have done good with Hank as main Antman instead of being Scott's predecessor.
Just remove....that one part.
I mean, I literally think there's no character they can't fix....except that Marcus dude...and probably Star Fox. And Star Fox is a hero. He just has the wrong type of power.
