Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

A couple of them did. They had a nice chat going too. Then the other Runaways showed up and blasted him because the Runaways main thing is that their experiences with their evil supervillain parents have pretty much destroyed any trust they had in adults.

Well, Gert kinda sorta spat all over his Comes Great Responsibility philosophy, basically calling it bullcrap...and that's before the others showed up and blasted him.
I believe the distrust also comes from the Avengers kinda just tossing them in foster care at the end of their first mini or something like that.

One Strip! One Strip!Yep.
I want to be surprised but I've been saying this for a while now: Disney wants to consolidate their MCU products under Disney+.
It's why they cancelled the Netflix shows.
It's why they cancelled Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
It's why the Ghost Rider spinoff suddenly isn't happening.
And now it's come for the Hulu shows.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.A major out of character moment for Captain America and why I don’t think much of Runaways’ position in the larger marvel universe
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThe funny thing is that the whole foster care thing actually works for a later member of the Runaways, Klara Prast. She got Happily Adopted by a pair of married men. That's especially meaningful since she's from the past and had a very harsh upbringing that meant she was pretty bigoted. Her being very happy with her new family is a sign that she's grown past her bigotry.
The Runaways' mistrust in adults is further reinforced by their experiences with Molly's grandmother who turns out to be a Mad Scientist.

Disgusted, but not surprisedGod, that moment
◊ was the worst.
"That's inane. Most people in life don't have great power, and the few that do are almost never responsible with it. The people who have the greatest responsibility are the kids with no power, because we're the ones who have to keep everybody else in check."
It's one of those bits of dialogue where the writer clearly intends for you to be like, "YEAH, you TELL HIM!" but actually just comes across like the writer has no idea what the f*ck they're talking about. It's ill-conceived one-upsmanship to try and score a point off of Marvel's flagship franchise, made by a writer who is not actually equipped to score the goal they're shooting for.
It starts out with a fundamental misunderstanding of the entire Great Power premise. Gert's first sentence treats "With great power, there must always come great responsibility" as if it's a statement of fact. Everyone with power automatically is responsible, period. But it's actually an instructive guideline: if you have power, then you are morally obligated to behave responsibly.
"Lots of people with power are irresponsible," isn't a rebuttal. It's just restating the reason for why a moral guideline is needed. It's the equivalent of saying that "Thou shalt not steal" is a stupid rule 'cause lots of people steal.
Then the second sentence dives straight into batshit crazytown. Since people WITH POWER are irresponsible f*ckwits, the people with NO POWER are the ones who are really responsible, because they use their NO POWER to rein in the actions of people WITH POWER. Somehow. Despite having no power.
It's a bad panel.

The Runaways are dicks. Except Old Lace who has never done anything wrong
I’m not too sure what that rebuttal is even supposed to mean

To be fair, Gert's an incredibly cynical girl who already distrusted heroes well before the thing with her Parents and the other adults pissing them off. I'm not surprised she'd find something to tear down in Pete's statement. She was probably resigned to distrust him from the get go.
This girl was already calling super heroes super fascists well before either Civil War was ever a thing.
...and I don't feel like I really defended her well here.
One Strip! One Strip! What makes this dumber is that Spidey started out as a teen. He starting heroing around the same age as them.
So unlike his interactions with Kamala where there is a clear admiration & respect between the preceding & succeeding generation, here Gert just comes across as "My generation is far better then you ya old fart."
Plus Spidey was inspired to heroism after the death of his beloved parental figure.

Well you more explained her issues than defending them. Honestly she sounds exactly like an edgy try hard teen.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I wonder if this was an attempt to relate to the younger crowd, by giving them heroes their age that are better than the adults.
The problem with that, of course, is that kids tend to LIKE the older heroes. Especially Spider-Man.
Oh God! Natural light!Never mind that the Runaways actual record as heroes wasn't that great (though when they did win they won big — they did save humanity from being wiped out by nephilim). They were at least self-aware of this: their motto is "try not to die".

Disgusted, but not surprisedPlus they lack the colorful ensemble.
On one hand you got adult heroes with a diverse array of appearances constantly saving the day & engaging in larger than life battles with equally colorful foes.
On the other are a bunch of edgy teens in regular clothes running away from their evil parents.
Though hey so I don't seem like I'm constantly ragging on them, they fact they are still in syndication shows they do have a fanbase.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The original run of the Runaways went sharply downhill after the first arc

Yeah. Runaways was pretty popular, even if a lot of hoops had to be jumped through to make the adults kinda look bad.
But then again, making other characters look bad in the lead's comic isn't such a new thing. Still, a world where Captain America doesn't immediately do all he can to help make sure these kids are well taken care of is not the world I know.
I recall hearing that. Gert died sometime later (though she's back now) and Old Lace was lost for a while until Hank Pym helped them out back during his time teaching at Avengers Academy.
