Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So they're ignoring the Time Travel rules set in Endgame.
  1. They did their time travel plot before Endgame even happened.
  2. Banner is not an expert on time travel.
  3. Endgame violated it's own rules with the Captain America ending.

Kevin Feige is now the Chief Creative Officer at Marvel in general.

He now oversees most of Marvel, including comics and TV.

Yes, the movies can now reference the shows.

Well, holy shit. Good on him. He deserves it.

That honestly makes me kinda want to get back into reading the comics.

You lost me at "Jonathan Hickman". His run on Avengers was part of the reason I got out of reading the comics.

HOX/POX is, I think, much better than Hickman's Avengers run. For one thing, it's seeped in X-Men history, tells a nearly complete story, and is filled with awesome moments. It also manages to reinvent a female character that was previously dead and make her the most important character in Marvel history: Moira MacTaggert.

Read Eve Ewing's Ironheart before Marvel cancels it because their pre-orders means of counting sales sucks. It's very fun and it has Riri and Miles Morales on a Groundhog Day misadventure.

[up][up] Unfortunately, it's already coming to an end with issue #12. Eve Ewing has stated that she's going to be writing something else for Marvel, though.

I know, that's why I said before they cancel it. sad

For one thing, it's seeped in X-Men history

That can be either a good thing or a bad thing. Continuity-heavy stories that demand you know what happened in Issue 157, page 6, panel 5 of X-Ultimatez: The X-Treme from 1976 are the most common causes of Continuity Lock-Out. I don't want my entertainment to assign me homework.

On the other hand, accessible stories that pay respect to the history of the franchise but make the effort to bring new audiences up to speed can be some of the best storytelling in a long-runner.

Continuity for continuity's sake just to make continuity nerds drool: bad.

Continuity for the sake of enriching the plot: good.

tells a nearly complete story

I like that sound of that!

and is filled with awesome moments

I also like the sound of that, though it's not as important as the complete story. I generally prefer emphasis on story over emphasis on "moments". It's part of the reason I don't like Infinity War and Endgame.

It also manages to reinvent a female character that was previously dead and make her the most important character in Marvel history

I have mixed feelings on that just because going too hyperbolic is part of what drove me away from Hickman. He's never content to just write cool stories. He wants his stories to be THE MOST ULTIMATEST ULTIMATE THING THAT EVER ULTIMATED IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE.

He writes with the clear intent that his work must become required reading for all future Marvel comics forever. He's not trying to tell interesting tales, he's trying to remake the very foundations of the Marvel Universe in his image. He's the epitome of the lore-driven writer, pushed to its very extreme.

Read Eve Ewing's Ironheart before Marvel cancels it because their pre-orders means of counting sales sucks. It's very fun and it has Riri and Miles Morales on a Groundhog Day misadventure.

Ooo, yes. If there is one character I regret dropping out of comics before she really became a thing, it's Riri Williams. I've always loved the idea of Riri, but have never had the chance to actually read her comics.

That can be either a good thing or a bad thing.
It doesn't demand you know everything about the X-Men (in fact, it's pretty much a soft reboot), but it has a lot of Easter eggs. I would recommend reading the first issue and if you like that, read the whole thing.

I have mixed feelings on that just because going too hyperbolic is part of what drove me away from Hickman.
I'm the one that's being hyperbolic. The way Hickman reinvents Moira is kind of brilliant and definitely unexpected.

Ike Perlmutter is an alt-right twat who thought it would be a good idea to do a story about an oppressed minority being gassed to death by a eugenicist absolute monarchy with the latter being treated as in the right. Whatever good he may have done, I have no sympathy for him.

[up] I'm pretty sure Perlmutter wasn't the one responsible for the Inhumans vs X-Men story. The EIC is in charge of creative decisions, not the Chairman of Marvel.

The version I've always heard is that the Inhumans movie (later show) was something of his pet project, and he was squeezing the creative side of the company to promote them to A-List in the comics.

Even if he was, that doesn't mean he insisted the crossover have the Terrigen Mists poison the mutants. That was entirely editorial.

I demand Tessa Thompson and Michael Peña in it too or it's not Mexican enough.

And Dave Bautista as The Invisible Swordsman. [lol]

For what I know, Ike just want the inhuman, he didnt expect to be.....THIS.

"Nick Fury, however, has already appeared twice in Agents of SHIELD, so...you know, there's your confirmation.

"

He could be a Skrull...

I will said the most "are really this two show conected" was Hive plan of turing the world full of act make up mutants and nobody but Shield being able to stop it, this around more or less the same time of civil war.

In fact, I wonder what SHIELD team have to said of what happen in CW.

I would so watch that Three Amigos remake. Even when I tend to be lukewarm on remakes in general.

As for the Inhumans, much like the Terrigen Mists to mutants, they are poison.

You know, it's funny, pre-Captain Marvel "might be a Skrull" jokes come across VERY differently than post-Far From Home "might be a Skrull" jokes.

Speaking of the Skrulls, them and the Kree are equally bad in the comics. I'm legit interested in why the movie chose to make the Skrulls clearly in the right.

[up]In the comic the skrull being asshole is because the kree so they are bigger assholes.

And I guess is to give Cap Marvel and heroic movitation, maybe because it seen fantastic four is still far away to see the day so is not a problem for them.

It’s probably because the current status quo for the Skrulls was a refugee people due to their planets being destroyed by Galactus or infighting or a bigger empire
