Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I don't always like the way he plays Spidey, but now I suddenly hope he plays the webhead forever.

Huh Tom Holland is a superhero.

From The Man himself:

"That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero."

'Nuff said? I think so, true believer. [awesome]

From kid to college to marriage to deal with the devil to kid to college to marriage to deal with the devil to kid to college...

Why do you think he keeps getting rebooted? Mephisto deals every time. First to bring back Harry, then to bring back Gwen. He was very close to pulling that trigger again for his secret identity.

And now it isn't just Peter he's targeting. He recently made a deal with Superior Spider-Man.

Incidentally, the first time Peter made the deal, he felt super-embarrassed over his recent emo trip and asked Mephisto to make him less of a dweeb.

The second time, Mephisto thought he was being clever when he added the clause, "I will take from you the one who cares for you more than any in all realities. You will grow in ignorance, never knowing the love and adoration they hold in their heart. Such unbridled desire, such passion, will never enter your life, and you will know only the vague hollow feeling of something missing in your heart."

He figured this would be a parent or Peter's future wife or maybe a child. But to his surprise, it wound up being Peter's creepy stalker, the Venom symbiote, that had Peter carved out of its life. Mephisto had a long sit to think about whether he'd accidentally made Peter's life better.

I feel like this isn’t the first time she’s expressed this kind of sentiment.

Yeah, when Gwyneth was on Jon Favreu's Chef Show and he asked her about filming the Spider-Man movie with him, she didn't even remember doing it. Odds are, they just give her her scenes to film, so goes and films it and then that's it, she doesn't even remember what movie she's filming it for, she just assumes it's another Avengers.

Pretty sure that was reported before even IW came out.

Not surprising really, she cameo'd in one scene at the end with RDJ and Tom Holland, with the brief bit focusing on Peter about to be revealed as the newest Avenger. IIRC, she also accidentally leaked a bunch about Endgame. I don't think the MCU, at least after IM 3, has been anything but just a well paying job for her.

Its also not unheard of for actors to simply refuse watching their own movies for whatever reason they may have. Adam Driver got sick watching TFA with his family at the premier.

I'm impressed they got back some of the actors for this!

Fans will be enlisted by Shuri (Letitia Wright) to test her latest prototype design: Emergency Response Suits, created with a proprietary blend of Wakandan and Stark Industries technology. When sinister forces intervene, guests at the Wakandan Outreach Centers will soon find themselves recruited into action, exploring iconic locations across the MCU. Fans will fight side by side with Avengers like Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), the Wasp (Evangeline Lily) and more.

At last, I've watched... Ant-Man!

Summary: A burglar wants to reform so he can be closer to his daughter. He gets involved in foiling an evil plot.

Stan Lee cameo: A bartender.

Observations:

  1. Following Jon Favreau and Joss Whedon, Edgar Wright is taken to the extreme by making this film, and gives up. I have, however, an important question to you all: would have been Edgar Wright's version be one of the greatest superhero movies?note
  2. Bryan Andrews and Jay Oliva storyboarded this film.
  3. I like the (literally) small stakes of this film. It's like a Breather Episode (but not without some ties to bigger stuff) of the MCU.
  4. I liked Ant-thony, too... too bad he died...sad
  5. Falcon, here? That's a pleasabt surprise to me!
  6. Yeah, I am aware that this film is accused of being too similar to Iron Man 1: guy with a revolutionary suit, a former associate trying to replicate its success that gets mad with power as the film progresses, the villain has similar powers to the hero etc. I personally don't think they were too similar. Ant-Man is distinct enough, in my opinion, to stand in its own feet.
  7. The Quantum Realm is freaky!
  8. Luis is one of the best parts of this movie. Michael Peña works pretty well like that!
  9. Wow. Just wow. I feel so bad for Scott Lang. Look how screwed his life is...
  10. So, the original Wasp must be here somewhere... and we'll deal with it in the sequel.
  11. I like Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. He sells it very well.
  12. I appreciate immensely the effort put in this movie for the scales.
  13. This film is also emotional, too. I really wanted Scott to reunite with his daughter Cassie so bad...
  14. Is it just me or Scott and Hope hook up quick?
  15. This film ended up being the end of Phase Two, after this spot was taken from Avengers: Age of Ultron for some reason.

The Stinger: Once more, two:

  1. Hank shows to his daughter Hope an experimental Wasp suit. They start to work to it togheter.
  2. Cap and Falcon are not sure what to do about something. Falcon says that he knows a guy.

10/10!note

I will soon enter Phase Three.

I don't think so. Edgar Wright notoriously has no idea how to write women most of the time. Hope only has a role in the film and Janet is only left pseudo-alive by way of Peyton Reed having a firmer grasp on writing the other 50% of the human populace.

I like Writght's films (Hot Fuzz is one of my top favorite comedies), but he ultimately wasn't right for this project and I 'm glad he left.
