Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Well I am penning a story that involves animal people & one of the main protagonists is bull man racist against humans & his relationship with his ex got destroyed by his own abuse towards her.

That is tricky to make work.

A Villain Protagonist can work in less serious works, especially if they often get their own comeuppance. Hence why I don't mind, say, Wile E. Coyote.

Bernthal's Punisher was great and I'm disappointed the series got cancelled.

Part of me is still clinging to hope that they'll somehow pick all the Netflix shows back up on their new streaming service, but given the age rating concerns, it may be a hollow hope. At least Punisher ended on a completed note compared to Luke Cage and Iron Fist's cliffhangers.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

This is also why I don't terribly mind the adaptation changes to Deadpool's character. I'd really rather not watch movies where I'm expected to root for an amoral violent mercenary.

Deadpool comics tend to give me a bit of whiplash between laughing at Deadpool's antics and making me feel bad for rooting for him.

What about Black Lagoon where the majority cast is compromised of at best morally grey people?

There's enough over the top action in it to keep you from really thinking about what an absolutely horrible place that setting is. Sometimes.

Then there are times the series goes into really dark stuff that makes me want to grab a bottle of bourbon.

The Lagoon crew are basically the A-team, but without the morality.

Secret Six had to go the usual route of pitting them against worse villains. Still, the only stories I really liked were the ones that reinforced that they were still at the end of the day, the bad guys.

I particularly liked the bit where a demon mocked Bane for deluding himself into thinking he had somehow redeemed himself.

And don't get me started on Suicide Squad.

Oh that lead to a cool moment in Bane deciding to Let Me Be Evil, that if he’s evil then he’s gonna do it spectacularly by barging into Batman’s home-sturf & take out his allies regardless of the consequences.

See I don’t really give much throught to whether their rootable or not. What really matters is whether they are entertaining or not. Cause the only way a super villain comic can be bearable is if the villain’s are “spectacular” in their evilness.

And the fact that Bane reacted like that ultimately proved that demon's point — if he really had turned over a new leaf, he wouldn't have stopped trying to be a better person even after finding out he was still damned. Bane was a blatant case of Wants a Prize for Basic Decency (not that he was particularly decent even during his stint on the Secret Six).

At least he’s honest about it now.

Heck, I also didn't like parts of Infinity War for this reason. Specifically, the parts that reminded me that Infinity War was in many ways Thanos' story. Especially that Soul Stone bit.

Heh that’s the funny difference. tongue

I enjoy those moments of rooting & feeling for the villain. It’s fun pageantry.

It’s like when rooting for Doppio against Risotto or the reverse from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

It really depends on how serious the work is. JJBA usually isn't that serious. It's just too hilariously campy most of the time. It's got Bizarre in the title for a reason.

There’s always limits.

Like I read about Ichi the Killer & it sounds way too fucking much from the descriptions alone. There’s a lot of apparent black comedy but it’s too gruesome & the characters abhorrent to really enjoy.

Endgame, despite the Time Travel, worked better since it no longer tried to make us sympathize with the guy who wanted to kill off half the universe.

Something I'd just like to point out: Disney does not own Hulu. Disney is a majority shareholder of Hulu, but there's still another 40% of the company owned by other people, and there are laws in place to protect minority shareholders from being screwed over. If Disney used its majority share of Hulu to cancel some of the sites popular shows, so that it could then pick them up for its own streaming site that it owns completely, all the other Hulu shareholders would have good cause to sue their ass.

The Netflix's Punisher series was crap and I eagerly wait the day they actually make a series about the Frank Castle they showed us in Daredevil.

That's my contentious opinion for the day, love you all, everyone.

[up][up]Disney owns 70% of hulu and agreed with Universal to buy it's last 30% over a period of a few years, so they do own hulu practically.

Don't forget some of this shuffling might be because of who is in control of various shows, Marvel Entertainment or Marvel Studios, Perlmutter is still in control of the former which includes control of all of the various TV/Streaming shows (Netflix, Ao S, ect) the later doesn't have any control over the shows up until the Disney + was announced.

Its been rumored that they are trying to pull more of the TV/Streaming away from Perlmutter after his botch up with Inhumans (which damaged Disney's rep with IMAX) Iron Fist and the reveal that the Netflix characters are tied up for another TWO YEARS post cancelation and cannot be simply moved to the new service, plus other issues so its possible they still want the GR Series and such they just need to work out the legal messes and find out when and where to launch it.

False. It's more of comicgaters conspiracy theories and their "anti-sjw" propaganda.
