Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'd have liked a scene of Quicksilver racing to stop Thanos at the precise moment Thanos decides to snap his fingers, with the fingers in slow-motion while Quicksilver fastly approaches, but only reaching him just as he finishes the action and grabs his fist just in time to turn to dust.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."better yet Thanos slows time down walks past him, sticks his foot out and Quick Silver crashes
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverHe DOES have the Time Stone by the time he shows up on Earth and Quicksilver, if alive, could have fought him.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI think some of that has to do with a lot of stories involving super-speed usually being a little too willing to give them "required secondary powers" and treat it as being equivalent to being able to slow down or stop time outright, and basically have it run on cartoon physics. This is actually a little bit of a pet peeve for me.
For example, in Days of Future Past, Quicksilver at one point grabs some bullets, and moves them out of the way of the target, among other things. Problem is, that's not how speed by default works. For one, even if you can grab a bullet, your hand isn't bulletproof. Plus you need to be able to survive the acceleration and deceleration, and even if you can, the friction between your foot and the ground wouldn't normally be enough to stop you.
And of course, there's the whole issue of reflexes, but that one kind of is a required secondary power.
Leviticus 19:34Quicksilver’s slower paced speed should be a bit more filmable, but Fox ran into the problem of turning him into The Flash.
A good balance for film should be that while Quicksilver is faster than anyone, you/the characters can still see him coming. Find a good balance between “fast enough to be a real threat” and “so fast nobody can even react.”
The easiest way to manage super-speed is to simply state super-speed doesn't equal super-stamina and he has to pace himself or he'll just black out from exhaustion at some point. It's odd how relatively rare that is despite it being a very clear Logical Flaw.
A friend of mine had a character named "Expresso", whose speed-based superpowers depended on him consuming caffeine, and thus his powers had a limit in terms of him having a limited amount of "juice" to burn through: at some point the super-speed will consume all the caffeeine he ingested, so he has to stop to ingest more. And even then his body has a limit to how much he can consume without just having a Overdose of cafeeine, so it's a super-speed with a time and amount limit set to it.
You just need to be creative with super-speed.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I recall My Hero Academia has a character
who requires sugar in order to power his super strength, and he also has downsides on how long it lasts and the amount that's consumed.

Kamen Rider Kabuto had a good handle on it, IMO, since the Kamen Riders and the Monsters all had the general level of speed. Up until Hyper Kabuto came into play anyway.
Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?@Gaon: That sounds fun, did he ever publish it?
@Tucker: He also gets dumber the more sugar he eats, so that's two drawbacks.
Edit:
, damn you, slim! shakes fist
x2 Kamen Rider rubs shoulders with anime, and I can't remember the last time any action anime didn't have someone who could Flash Step.

Yet another example of how My Hero Academia is ahead of the curve.
You could also the route of the heroes who definitely already should have had a movie.
MAS Y MENOS! SI, PODEMOS!
No. He used it for a rpg once and we sometimes discuss turning it into a comic by teaming him up with another character of mine called "Macho" Mahesh (both Mahesh and Expresso are superpowered boxers, but Mahesh is a Rubber Man type). Just a thought so far, though.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."Well, if it ever becomes a reality, give me a heads up, always happy to help projects of fellow tropers.
And while Mas y Menos are a really fun pair, ain't them a little to gimmicky to carry a movie by themselves?
BTW what's the name of the Wrestler Tiger Lady and the blonde mute who posseses people? You know, the B team Mutano teamed up with when the villains took out the Titans?
Edited by HailMuffins on Sep 19th 2019 at 9:01:56 AM
The blonde guy is Jericho Wilson, IIRC. One of Slade's kids.
The wrestler woman was Pantha. In the DC mainstream comic line, Pantha is actually Wildebeest's adoptive mother. Here, they are merely described as good friends. Pantha in the comics was also a cat-human hybrid mutated by the Wildebeest society, whereas in the cartoon she has no physical cat attributes.

Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?He was also put on a bus for the exact reason mentioned with Quicksilver
.
Generally all the powers in MHA come with some kind of drawback to prevent overuse.
The resident fire user is at risk of overheating if he fights for too long & their's a strong implication that the fire using villain who's near completely covered in burn scars is due to power overuse.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I'm amused by all this talk about speedsters being overpowered, so they can't be written well in movies. Especially since Agents of SHIELD figured out a way to have a speedster as one of the main ensemble and write her damn well — they just added in the weakness to her powers when they introduced her: Yo-Yo can run anywhere within a single heartbeat, but she always snaps back to her original position — it's still a storybreaker power sometimes, especially when they are up against normal humans, but it definitely has its limitations.

Quicksliver would have defeated Thanos before he could even snap his finger! So yeah he'd too over powered, cool powers though
