Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

In some cases though, Kicked Upstairs is slightly more justified since it's more of a hassle to outright fire the fuckup. In real life, the people to whom this happens to are very aware they are being snubbed. Some take it with grace and make the best of it. Others end up resigning months or even weeks later. The latter is sometimes the entire point of the "promotion" — the company wants them to go away of their own accord with a minimum of fuss.
In Ross' case, him becoming Secretary might be a mixed blessing to him. Sure, he's got a very prestigious and powerful position...but he's not actually part of the armed forces anymore. He's not allowed on the frontlines, where the action is. I imagine he'd be a bit like how Kirk felt when he was promoted to Admiral.

Disgusted, but not surprisedOf course, Kicked Upstairs can sometimes backfire since it can give other people the impression that the person being kicked upstairs is actually capable. They actually think the person was promoted because the person was awesome and not because the person was an eyesore their bosses didn't want to deal with anymore. This leads to the fuckup getting into a position of even more power and authority, which leads to disaster. Because the only thing worse than a fuckup is a fuckup with power.
...So I guess we can expect President Ross in the near future of the MCU.

Disgusted, but not surprised@M84 Something similar happened in real life. Some candidate-I think it was Teddy Roosevelt-got "promoted" to VP to prevent him from actually being president. A complication arose when the the president was assassinated and the VP they wanted to keep from being pres got the job.
Leviticus 19:34The Kicked Upstairs page also mentioned James Buchanan, who was promoted to various positions to keep him away because nobody liked him. This unfortunately led to him gaining an undeserved reputation as an experienced statesman, leading to him becoming President. And that didn't work out well at all.

No wonder he prefers to go by Bucky
.
Ross becoming Secretary of State has nothing on Norman Osborn being put in charge of America's national security. At least Ross had a long career as a general and one could argue that he did some good for his country when he wasn't leading illegal military operations both at home and abroad. Osborn was a corrupt CEO who murdered a college girl and yet this was forgotten because he killed the Skrull Queen.
Did Foxsilver get one of his high speed sequences set to song moments in Dark Phoenix?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersDamn. His scenes in DOFP and Apocalypse were good (in fact his scene is the only bit of Apocalypse I've seen) but I think that showing pulls his average way down.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers

As the bad guy in The Good Place put it, "I'm a middle-aged white man. I can only fail up."
