Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The problem here, of course, is that the Ghost Rider needs a vehicle to ride. Generally, after the mammoth, they moved onto horses (the Wild West version of Ghost Rider, Carter Slade, rode one), and then motorcycles and cars, which were much more efficient than animals were.

Other versions include:

And if you didn't read that last sentence and go "HOLY CRAP THAT'S AWESOME," then I'm afraid we must part ways.

Ghost Rider is so edgy that he transcends the goofiness into pure awesomeness.

I mean, I can't picture anyone not thinking that's awesome. Though I also admit I did a Double Take when I first read it, and then when I clicked the link and saw it was for real, I was like C'mon! Are you kidding me!?

But yeah, that's awesome. Ghost Rider deserves all the respect.

The downside to Thanos being dead is that now Squirrel Girl can't defeat him, which means Galactus can't call him a tool.

This conversation about dragons has made me remember that Kitty Pryde's signature sidekick is a small dragon named Lockheed, and that's something the X-Men movies never did. I want the MCU to give Kitty Pryde her dragon.

Cyclops also once outsmarted Dracula & his vampire invasion in an epic convoluted plan I recall.

Man, and I thought Cowboy Ghost Rider was the epitome of coolnes.

Clearly I'm naught but a grasshopper compared to the minds at Marvel, and I shall now commit seppuku to redeem myself and not bring further shame upon my family's name.

I've always wondered, how in the world does a girl who can phase through walls have a dragon for a pet?

I think the X-Men went to an alien planet and she found an egg, it hatched, and she raised Lockheed as its mommy. That or the Savage Realm, I'm not entirely sure.

It was later revealed that Lockheed was actually a agent of SWORD, the equivalent of SHIELD but for space affairs, and he was keeping a eye on the X-Men.

Lockheed was always criminally underused imho. He's a very powerful fighter despite his small size — the Brood are shit-scared of him for good reason. In Whedon's Breakworld arc, Implacable Man Ord is scared of Lockheed because Lockheed nearly roasted him alive in their first meeting.

Having Lockheed show up in the first MCU X-Men would immediately distinguish it from the Fox Men. Yes, the comics are crazy and that’s why we’re here.

...But we haven't seen dragons in the MCU yet, so I'm not sure if they can just throw them at us. Maybe through Eternals or Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings?

It's a shame the IM movies were made when the MCU was still in their "grounded" phase. Otherwise we could have had Fin Fang Foom.

Well, with Iron Man, it could be said that the madness started here, but with Captain America, Captain Marvel, Ant Man and whatever else gets brought to light, looks like it wasn't so big a deal.

Wake me up at your own risk.
