Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] I would assume that as she was written for a Sony film (officially) then Sony would have the rights to her but it might be covered in whatever deal they did in order for Marvel to maintain some sort of synchronicity and introduce their own version.

Irredeemable outright has a character who parodies the Electric Black Guy by occasionally complaining how stereotypical his powers are.

I assume that the trope happened because DC invented an entirely new eerily similar black lightning man for superfriends rather than pay the creator royalties

Which just started the trend of expying the hell out of him

Static was a deliberate homage, also.

A homage that kept trying to team up with his inspiration.

It finally a happened in an issue of The Brave and the Bold (comic to be clear; not the animated series), and then in the Young Justice animated series as well.

A homage that kept trying to team up with his inspiration.

To be fair, the only started happening after WB bought Milestone, the second stage homage from the Static television show nonwithstanding.

Heck, at first DC tried to make John Stewart Static's idol/mentor before taking the obvious approach and having it be Jefferson instead.

Amusingly Electro typically a white guy becomes black in his debut movie.

Crazy thought: Stark snapped Thanos and his army away. Just like Thanos did to half of all life in the universe.

Theoretically someone could just grab the stones again and un-snap Thanos and his army.

Well, they'd have to find out how bring the Stones back from limbo first.

I'd imagine it isn't the kind of thing you can fix with glue and duct tape.

Speaking of Infinity Stones, reading up on esoteric happy endings a while back made me realize that they don't have the Time Stone, aka the one thing that's stopping Dormammu from invading Earth.

Think that's something they'll bring up in Multiverse of Madness?

It's funny because in Endgame, the Ancient One literally makes that exact point when arguing against letting Bruce take the Time Gem.

But I guess Future Dormammu's a chill dude, 'cause it never comes up in the main timeline.

It'd be cool if Multiverse Of Madness establishes that the reason Dormammu didn't swoop in and annihilate everybody (speaking of, did Thanos know about him? He couldn't have, given that the possibility of everybody being turned into demon husks goes against his whole "save everyone by culling the population" plan) was because there was some kind of extradimensional demon war going on that's distracting him, and the plot involves Nightmare trying to use the opportunity some terrifying scheme to gain a power advantage over more powerful enemies.

And then the whole thing ends with set-up for Shuma Gorath.

[up]I admittedly worry that a Shumah Gorrath movie will involve time travel and/or Gorrath’s other well known comic foe, Conan the Barbarian, which could be way too many pieces if not handled properly.

Well, Thanos and Maw did know about Strange being a Sorcerer without any surprise, so an explanation I came with is that Dormammuu was stoped from invading this dimension by sorcerers from other planets, and was trying to succeed in Earth until he was defeated by Strange in which he decided to try his luck in another planet.
