Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

@alliterator It seems that the reason wasn't so much a continuity thing, but rather Disney and Marvel not wanting Venom to be related in anyway to the MCU. Holland's cameo would imply that Venom is part of their universe, and they didn't want that, which is fair.

Agreed. That's why I was against the Venom movie from the start. Any interaction Spider-Man would have with Venom loses all significance when you don't have the Symbiote be with Peter, have Peter dump it after realizing the damage it's doing to him, and then have the Symbiote go to Eddie where they realize they both hate Peter Parker, the Spider-Man. (Eddie would also need to hate Peter or Spidey. Not sure how'd that be feasible though, so whatever.)

Sony being so insistent on crossing over Holland's Spider-Man and Venom is easily the most annoying part of this whole deal.
This song needs more love.> Sony being so insistent on crossing over Holland's Spider-Man and Venom is easily the most annoying part of this whole deal.
Agreed. I mean, I still want to see it happen, but I prefer it'd be done by professionals who build up to it properly, not by soulless, brainless bean-counters who jump right to it because they got to have money.
Is that the new conspiracy theory for why Venom made $856m?
Last I heard, the going excuse was "Everyone went to see it because it was SO SO BAD that they couldn't NOT see how bad it is for themselves. Multiple times, even."

I'm curious about where the line is between those? Marvel is rife with Executive Meddling and the desire to make moolah like anyone else. They just happen to make the movies good.
I assume Venom appealed to the sizable quadrant of people who don't talk about the movies online and just wanted to watch a goofy action movie/buddy-comedy, and don't really get that deep into questions of what makes a movie good or not. There are a lot of 'em.
That's pretty much it, yeah.
A lot of people went to see Venom, and then enjoyed Venom. Plenty of movie-goers didn't even realize they were supposed to be upset about Spider-Man not being in the film, and just had a good time.

A Spider-Man scene would not have added anything concrete to the movie anyway
