Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Yeah, honestly I think the Hulk distribution rights issue is technically a fixable one. If a Hulk solo film was a reasonably guaranteed hit, then I think Disney would either take the loss by letting Universal distribute or be willing to pay an amount Universal is willing to sell them for.
The problem is, a Hulk solo film is not a reasonably guaranteed hit. The Incredible Hulk holds the record for the lowest grossing MCU film ever made and didn't do great critically either. And since the Hulk has found a lot of success as a supporting character, Marvel is content to make movies about other characters and drop the Hulk in during Avengers films or teamups.
So just because the problem is fixable doesn't mean Marvel has the incentive to actually put the effort in to fix it.
In theory they could probably do a Hulk TV Disney+ show, but I think in this case they just honestly wanted to do She-Hulk instead. Phase 4, very broadly speaking, is supposed to be about the rise of the next generation of heroes, and She-Hulk plays into that theme.

I hope and crossing my fingers that the She-Hulk series uses Byrne and Slott runs as inspirations opposed to the recent ones (Tamaki's run was dreadful to read and whatever Jason Aaron is doing with her is nothing but a mockery of her character in a blatant Author Tract since Aaron is a inconsistent but not at levels of Bendis)
I wonder if Mark Ruffalo will make guest appearances in She-Hulk.
Like creepy stories? Check out my book!I doubt that Aaron’s run will be used anyway. It’s more the kind of poking at a character that’s long established
You can’t do “maybe I prefer being scary and ‘ugly’ to pretty and funny” if the character hasn’t been established over many years and issues to trend the other way
Plus the whole thing where giant Kirby space gods need her swole for some future conflict

Forever liveblogging the AvengersAll right, I made this point on Twitter already,
but I'm putting it here too.
I am aware that when this Disney/Sony Spider-Debacle started, I was on Team Disney in a heartbeat because they're better at movies than Sony.
But after reading up on Bob Chipman's stance on the matter (he takes no side, both sides are crazy, and thinks it might be staged so that Spidey is still talked about), I'm thinking he's right.
Both sides are being immature about this and I don't want to take sides anymore.
I just want Spider-Man to stay put. No more reboots.

I highly doubt it's staged.

I do not like or trust Bob Chipman with...anything, but business is about profit first. That’s the ledgers of both companies clashing with fandom desire, and in those cases, the ledgers usually win out.
Also staging it? So the D23 summit has an aura of negativity around it? That makes no sense. (Which is why I don’t trust him, presenting a theory like that).

The deal breakdown itself being staged? Crazy, it's not like Spider-Man needed help being talked about what with finally hitting a billion dollars at the box office, becoming Sony's highest grossing movie ever, and it being (I think) relatively expected that a third movie was coming in another two years based on those factors.
One of the two parties purposefully revealing the deal breakdown in the hopes of gaining leverage or at least forcing the other party to come back to the table? Much more plausible. Only question is who did it, because with all the information floating around neither side looks good.
Definitely mad at both, though. I've settled on being ever so slightly more upset with Sony, if only because I'm used to it, I'm mad they still have any rights to Spider-Man at all, and if it wasn't Disney on the other side of the table I'd probably nod and say "Yeah, helping with these movies and attaching one of your own top dogs to the production for practically nothing isn't really a sustainable deal in the long term and I don't blame them for wanting a bigger piece." But it's Disney, so I have to put it under the lens of "You guys reaaaaaaally don't need it and have done some pretty not-so-cool things."
Best way I could put it to a friend of mine is that it's like watching a giant, evil shark trying to bully another, smaller, more incompetent evil shark. Or like watching a small, incompetent evil shark trying to boss around a bigger, smarter evil shark. Neither side really engenders sympathy no matter which way you flip it.
I keep hearing this line during the Sony/Disney discourse and I don't understand it.
You're mad that Sony legally owns the rights to a franchise they legitimately purchased years ago and never sold?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yes, I am. I'm mad because they acquired the rights when Marvel (who had nothing to do with Disney at the time) really needed money in a deal that, as demonstrated by how Sony still HAS the rights after running two separate cinematic attempts at the franchise into the ground, is incredibly favorable to Sony just holding onto the rights either forever, or until people are so sick of Spider-Man that we wouldn't see him for a long time after the rights reverted anyways.
Especially since it was literally twenty years ago, and it feels like Sony is holding onto the rights just as much for spite purposes as for money considering Avi Arad and Tom Rothman are calling the shots now.

No, the OP IS mad that Sony just thinks small and keeps shooting themselves in the foot with it by meddling around like in Spider-Man 3, Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Venom.
And they STILL think they’re onto something with movies on Morbius, Kraven, Jackpot, and Nightwatch.

I gotta be honest, I'm finding it difficult to care about Spider-Man with Ms. Marvel now on the table.

This song needs more love.Furthermore, What If...? will dedicate an episode to each MCU movie including the Spider-Man ones.
So someone BETTER do something if we still want Holland in on this.

I'm trying to not stress over this, but I'm totally not on Disney side, only because the've shown to be extremely petty before with FF and X-Men that they where willing to tarnish their names, and surely would do the same to Spider-Man.
After all, do I have to remind you all the fiasco with Marvel vs Capcom Infinte, and every other videogame where they forced dwvelopers to not use any FF or X-Men Charscter. Or cancelling various comics of them. Doesn't help that Disney doesn't believe videogames is a worthwhile media to follow.
At least Sony give us an amazing Spider-Man videogame.
I certainly don't wish for Spider-man to suffer the same fate the FF and the X-Men suffered before the Fox buyout.
