Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

There was a meeting shortly after he was fired, people are now guessing that they told Gunn they had to 'fire' him due to the ongoing scrutiny that was part of the Fox Merger. He might have been given sly hints that he would be 're-hired' once the heat went down if he kept his head down and didn't make waves.

Gunn took his payout and kept his mouth shut, Disney acted like they were shopping around for a new director all of whom 'declined' then within a week of the sale date being finalized...he's rehired.

So all the Right-Wingers succeeded in doing was getting Gunn paid for the same film TWICE and got him a nice side gig doing Suicide Squad.

Ms. Marvel getting a series is way more important than whatever is going on with Spider-Man.

This song needs more love.

Will it be possible to pull off her powers on a tv show budget?

I think we can remove the spoiler tags for the news about the Ms. Marvel Disney+ TV show. Which: awesome! And since it's Disney+, thus make by Marvel Studios, there's actually a bigger chance of her showing up in a movie. (I'm predicting Young Avengers, which I think will also have Kate Bishop, who is also first showing up in a Disney+ show.)

My only problem is this:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, British writer Bisha K. Ali, a comedian and staff writer on Hulu's Four Weddings and a Funeral, will be penning the series and acting as showrunner. No casting details or release dates have been made available at this time.
I tried watching Hulu's Four Weddings and a Funeral and I couldn't. I just...wasn't good. But then again, I only watched the first episode, so perhaps it got better? And, curiously, one of the creators of that show was Mindy Kaling, who said she actually had talks with Marvel about a Ms. Marvel show. So I would have expected Kaling to be the showrunner, not Ali. But perhaps she impressed Disney and Marvel with her pitch.

Will it be possible to pull off her powers on a tv show budget?
Her powers are basically "stretchy and grows big and small," so: yes.

[up][up][up]A series is longer than a movie.

[up][up]All of the Disney+ Marvel shows apparently have a huge budget.

I think the bigger question is: will Kamala be an Inhuman and therefore will Disney+ acknowledge Agents of SHIELD?

Me: If the MCU is getting rid of Spider-Man, then I'm through with those jerks!

Internet: Kamala Khan is getting a Disney+ show!!!

Me: Oh. Well. Uh. Hmmm. ...Eh, thinking about it, maybe I can afford to stop thinking about Spidey for a while. He'll probably be fine. Besides, what corporation goes for lose-lose solutions, anyway?

Look, all I want for Christmas is a Spider-Man/Ms. Marvel crossover movie special.

Unfortunately, I'm Jewish.

Huh. I figured that Kamala would get a movie, but this also works. Back to things wanted for the Fantastic Four, I really hope they do a version of Reed that isn't an insufferable moron.

KAMALA! MY GIRL! SHE'S FINALLY GONNA BE IN THE MCU!

I'll admit, I was a bit miffed that she's getting a series and not a movie, but it does seem like Disney+ series are more closely connected to the MCU movies than other Marvel series have been so we might end up seeing her in movies interacting with other MCU characters, so that's cool. Plus, a series does generally work better for her Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World adventures, plus will give her a stronger supporting cast, which would be great, since I love Nakia and Mike and Bruno and Zoe.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

Also, recently, G. Willow Wilson (one of the creators of Kamala Khan) said she was leaving writing Wonder Woman in order to do a "bucket-list-dream-project," but she didn't say what. If it's writing for the show, hell yes, please.

Tons of rumors floating around that the Spider-Man situation is resolved or will be soon.

Don't take anything with a grain of salt just yet, but things may be more hopeful now

Even if they lose Spidey, at least Ms. Marvel will mean that the MCU will still have a teenage perspective.

Also, Kit Harrington is joining the MCU and I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess he's playing Brian Braddock, Captain Britain.
