Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Having not seen Dark Phoenix yet, what exactly is wrong with it?

The second act is like 10 minutes long. You can tell that they cut out a lot of footage, probably to get more show time since they knew it would get buried in June. As a result, the movie feels rushed and the villains not being integrated well into the story.

It's bland and ultimately pointless.

You can call it bland but it’s not pointless. It does resolves Jean’s arc that started in X-Men: Apocalypse and ties into the ending of DOFP.

The Dark Phoenix saga also had years of build-up and consistant characterization to play off of. It's like the Death of Superman. If you cant build up to it, it has no impact.

The story doesn’t the way you think it does. Long story short: the marketing for the movie is very misleading. Hell, the title itself is misleading.

But the ending of DOFP already spoiled it.

Update on Spider-Man: The Corporate Divorce Saga:

Cosmic Book News reported (spread a rumor on?) a new deal that's being offered and it REALLY sounds like Sony will benefit from it in the long run.

Of note:

  • A 6-picture deal with Tom Holland, with an option for a 7th.
  • Three more Spider-Man films after Spider-Man 3, which will be a new trilogy.
  • The second trilogy focusing on Peter Parker's college years where he meets up and team up with Firestar and Iceman of the X-Men (based on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends).
  • The other three movies include two Avengers films in which Spider-Man will have a larger role and become friends with Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four.
  • Marvel Studios will helm and co-finance all Spider-Man related movies for 30% of the full profits.
  • Sony would still distribute, but Disney will acquire exclusive digital and online rights for Disney+ and affiliated TV networks.
  • Marvel Studios will helm and co-finance Spider-Verse live-action spinoffs under the same terms.
  • Venom will relocate into the MCU.
  • Sony will be given permission for TV live-action programs based on Spider-Verse properties (Sony only has film rights to Spider-Man, but needs permission from Disney for TV rights)
  • Disney wants the deal to be done before Saturday's Marvel panel at D23 Expo, since Spider-Man is looking to have a spot of a D23 Expo panel.

HOWEVER.

As juicy as this deal sounds, it might really be just wish fulfillment clickbait nonsense.

That said, Sony would be stupid to say no to this.

[up]If it’s real.

Also we’ve established Rothman is...stubborn in his beliefs. He may genuinely think Sony is better off taking the kids and doing his own thing.

[up][up]Mr. Targetmaster Joe, if the news you reported say that Sony will be given permission for Spidey-related live-action TV series, then why Phil Lord & Chris Miller have already signed a deal with Sony Pictures Television for Spider-Man-related TV series? Also, I just hope those news are real.

Additionally, Tom Holland posted on his Instagram account this. What does that mean?

They won't be able to say much at D23 even if the deal is made. It would be too late.

Mr. Targetmaster Joe, if the news you reported say that Sony will be given permission for Spidey-related live-action TV series, then why Phil Lord & Chris Miller have already signed a deal with Sony Pictures Television for Spider-Man-related TV series?

Well, that’s a paradox if I ever read one. Like I said, the page I posted might just be wish fulfillment clickbait nonsense.

I wish it was legit, but an article from that same website regarding Holland's recent Instagram post claimed Iron Man died in Infinity War, so that’s a red flag towards the source's credibility.

I just want the nightmare to end...

[up] Well, that kinda kills a substantial amount of buzz...sad I mean, I want to believe they'll figure something out by then, but you might be the one who's right.

Getting Spider-Man back isn't worth having Venom in the MCU.

Additionally, Tom Holland posted on his Instagram account this. What does that mean?

Venom has to first be rebooted & then introduced at a later point in time.

Cause Venom & Spidey interacting is completely pointless with the changes made to the former as is.

[up] Ah that's cute. Always sweet how friendships & close bonds are formed on the movie set.

Going to say no Venom in the Cinematic Universe,it would make it the third outing for Venom after the Sam Remi film did it as well, the concept is in danger of getting stale and contrived,I'd rather they focus on villains like Kevin the hunter who've not been in a film before

I kinda want Venom in the MCU, but it’s the Hardy Venom and he’s having his own adventures being a homicidal dork. Hell, there’s the explanation for the Spider symbol.

“I thought it looked cool, Eddie.”

“I need to teach you about gimmick infringement.”

Alright, on a lighter note, here's a question I've thought of for some reason. Is there an MCU character you would like to see outright killed off? Iunno. Was curious if people even had an answer.

[up] That's a lighter question?

I can't think of a character I'd like to see killed off, since I don't really think there are any that I legitimately hate or anything. There's not that many villains who've escaped punishment and deserve karmic retribution.

I guess if there's a character I can see dying over the course of Phase 4, I wouldn't be surprised if Drax ended up biting it in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. I think he's the most likely of the main group to die, Big Guy Fatality Syndrome is a thing, and his story arc is mostly complete. Aside from his relationship with Mantis, he really didn't get a whole lot to do in the second film, and I can see his death really affecting the rest of the team.

Of course, we already have a dead Guardian with Gamora, but you know... Endgame happened.

That feels like kind of a loaded question. Like the real question is, "Which MCU character sucks and you hate them?"

Like. I, personally, have thought that Scott Lang is a useless spotlight-thief who has no business being the main character of his movies when the plot never has anything to do with him.

But I wouldn't want to kill him off; that's just mean-spirited. I just want him to go away and be with his daughter over there somewhere.

I'd be okay if Tom Hardy was kept for the role, he's a good actor.

He'd even be a great actor if he stopped mumbling every single one of his lines, so that I might understand what he's actually saying.

Which MCU character sucks and you hate them?

Well, if we can only pick one I'd say Darcy, and Handsome Rob'd probably say Starlord.

I feel weird about the whole Spiderman thing. Because in a petty way I'm kinda glad it's happening.

I want Disney to go through at least a modicum of shit in their quest to have a monopoly over everything. If Sony can take a pointless jab at them that's fine by me. I didn't love the Spiderman movies enough that I would desperately want Spiderman back in the MCU at all costs.

To be honest, I didn't really see a problem with the Fox/Disney buyout. I wasn't really sure what people were getting so up in arms about.

But. Like. After witnessing the backlash to Sony exercising their right to decide what they want to do with their franchise that they own the rights to. I, uh. I see the problem now.

If I were Sony, I wouldn't want to come back to that negotiating table. If this is how people are going to react when a deal falls through after two movies, what's it going to be like at three? Or four? And that was when people thought it was a 50/50 split that Disney was asking for. What happens when it is?

If I were Sony, I'd be pretty freaked out right now. My only thought would be "Run away and never look back, 'cause Disney's fans be crazy." Sony entered this deal because they wanted to reverse the Spider-films' downward box office trend. They never agreed to become a feudal liege-state to the Disney Emperor.

...

Part of me gets it (because Logan has issues with his own self named trope both in and out of the comics)...

....but I think it'd just be better to not use him for a while.

I expect that to happen anyway; Just like how MCU Spiderman isn't using a lot of his foes from the Spider-Man Trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man Series, Logan will likely be put on the back burner to focus on other X-men.

....still not sure if I want them to just kill him off like that either. We've already watched him die in a far worse manner.

Throwing him into the sun would be too quick. I always knew you were soft Bocaj.tongue

I wouldn't necessarily want the character to die but I'd want Star-Lord written out.

He's a rare case where I don't like the character or the actor playing the character.
