Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The real plot twist would be if Sony bought out Disney. That'd be something no one would see coming.

Nobody expects the Sony acquisition!

Don't catch you slippin' now.

If you think Sony is going to keep monopoly-building unchecked, then I have some bad news for you.

I don't. It's clear nothing is gonna stop Disney at this point. What I'm not gonna do is cheerlead for that because they happen to own some funnybook characters I like.

There are comical books that offer that very concept you crave.

If you squint and rock the comic back and forth, its almost like its happening in motion.

Also, there have been crossovers in the Spider-Man 90s cartoon

Didn't he come back as the new Jackal?

Have they inevitably killed him back off again?

The Clone Saga but not shit would be a good arc for a Spider-Man cartoon.

[up] Yes and I dunno. He died in Spider-Geddon but was brought back pretty quickly.

[up][up]The 90s cartoon version of the Clone Saga is considered good from what I remember.

There wasn't really a 90's version animated version of the Clone Saga.

They did have Ben there, but he was part of a multidimensional Spider group trying to stop a version of Peter Parker who'd both 100% flipped his shit AND bonded with the Carnage Symbiote.

Oh, and he wanted to basically destroy the entire universe.

....you know what? That is better than the original comic book.

Okay, strap on to your seats, because here comes the Comics Train:

Ben Reilly did return in Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy a few years ago. And yes, it turns out he was the new Jackal. Here's what happened: the old Jackal resurrected Ben using a new cloning technology...and then killed him again. And then brought him and killed him, over and over and over again, a total of 26 times, driving Ben insane. And then Ben escape, knocked out the Jackal, took over, and began offering various people the opportunity to bring back their dead loved ones. Unfortunately, while the clones are perfect, they are also subject to decay and need a daily pill to stop it... and they also tend to spread a virus called the Carrion virus. A huge fight ensues, all the clones are killed except two: Doc Ock manages to put his mind into a perfect clone and Ben saves his own clone body, only suffering from some, uh, physical degradation.

And then he starred in his own book, Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider, moving to Las Vegas and stealing a Spider-Man costume from a cosplayer. And yes, he was still pretty mentally unstable. In fact, he met Death (in the form of Marlo Chandler), who told him that dying and being reborn all those times basically corrupted his soul and if he dies and is reborn one more time, he soul will basically shatter and break. So, yeah, the book ends with that exact thing happening.

But then Spider-Geddon happens and the Inheritor's cloning technology is found and used on Ben and because their cloning technology is actually far advanced from what was originally used to bring Ben back, it "resets" his soul (I guess?) and he's perfectly fine physically and mentally.

Keep in mind that the 30-70 split was an opening bid, from what I understand, and you always offer a better deal for yourself than what you actually want and/or are willing to take home, it's a basic tactic.

[up]And people say Manga is weird.

...I mean, it is, generally, but really, who are CM readers to judge?

The best part about Ben being the Jackal, though, was that he wore a cool Jackal mask and a red jacket. And then when Spider-Man points this out, the Jackal goes, "Please, Peter. This is darker than red. It's more of a...scarlet."

I thought up a good compromise:

  • On the next Spider-Man movie, Sony and Marvel can go in 90-10.
  • But they go 50-50 — each company providing 50% of the production costs and reaping 50% of the profits — for the movie after that one: Spider-Man/Deadpool.

You know you want it.

[up] I'd personally prefer Spider-Man/Fantastic Four. Nothing against Deadpool, but Spidey and the FF (especially the Human Torch) are family, and it's high time that the movies show that.

Agreed.

Peter is a long time FF ally. Hell, he should probably be better known for being an FF ally than an Avenger truthfully.

Spider-Man is family in the same way that you tell your son's best friend 'oh you can come over anytime you like, you're famiiiiily!'
