Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It seem like Sony did propose a counter offer but Disney also rejected it.

With all of this arguments between Sony and Marvel, I have this to ask: why are they so hung-up over keeping Spider-Man? It really wasn't their's to begin with and they want to keep it why?

The same reason why Disney lobbied for copyrights to last for more than a century, or why we got movies of really old books like Mr. Popper's Penguins, or perpetual remakes and sequels of everything. Because copyrights are expensive and it takes so much effort to get them that it's more lucrative to hang on to the ones you have than to ever give them up.

[up] Maybe in Thor: Love and Thunder?

Death's weird when it comes to comics. tongue

Btw, apparently TMZ posted a piece saying Stan Lee's daughter, Joan Celia Lee, sides with Sony in the Marvel/Sony War for Spider-Man, saying guys like Marvel and Disney "must be checked and balanced by others who, while still seeking to profit, have genuine respect for Stan Lee and his legacy."

But...it's TMZ. Does anybody here listen to even one sentence those guys say?

Oh right. That movie.

...really hoping they change Jane's origin. I mean they have to - Thor didn't become "unworthy" and, as far as I remember, Jane didn't have cancer.

What's the issue with TMZ? I don't really know anything about them.

Basically:

TMZ is a tabloid news website that are on the aggressive side of getting the hot scoop and by "aggressive," I mean "getting in celebrities' faces, spreading false facts, and having a very poor sense of ethics like stealing props and going way too into detail over suicide details."

So you can see why I'm more than a little skeptical of them...

[up]x2 Yeah, even the Thor fans that like Jane agree that the way she gets the hammer is seven different shades of shit.

BTW really wish they simply give her a codename rather than her being literally "Fem!Thor". I mean, no one ever used "Thuderstrike" in the MCU, so you know.

Not for nothing, but Stan Lee was in a battle with his daughter because she was trying to bleed him dry.

AH-HA!

And now she's claiming Sony or someone should keep Marvel and Disney on a leash? Hypocrite.

It's no wonder why Marvel and Disney don't contact her (according to the TMZ page).

Actually, I should clarify something, maybe asking for 50/50 might have been much, but you know why I’m siding with Disney on this debacle? They get Spider-Man.

Fiege gets Spider-Man.

Watts gets Spider-Man.

Lord & Miller get Spider-Man.

Even Raimi got Spider-Man.

Tom Rothman DOES NOT get Spider-Man. He can't even get Venom. In fact, Rothman hating superheroes gives me half a mind to believe he only funds them to A) make what he thinks is a quick buck and B) so people would quit bugging him about them.

He claims that after Venom and ITSV, they learned everything they need from Kevin's playbook.

No.

NO.

You don't just claim you got everything from 2 movies. It DOES NOT work like that. And you do not blow off a one-of-a-kind deal right after you got to distribute a movie that made more than a billion dollars! That just hinges on stupid and sounds like it should be illegal.

I WANT to believe this will get fixed up soon, but I'm worried it won't be truly fixed until someone makes Rothman go away. He doesn’t do anyone any good.

Fire him. NOW.

Tom Rothman was also the executive who ruined Deadpool, remember? He's the one that insisted on sewing his mouth shut in Origins and refused to greenlight a Deadpool film. (It was only after Rothman had left Fox and that opening VFX scene had been leaked to great acclaim that the movie was greenlit.)

Now, is Rothman a good film executive? Sure. He's the one who founded and was the first President of Fox Searchlight, which made many Oscar-winning films. As President of Fox, the films he oversaw were nominated for 150 Oscars and made over $30 billion. There is a reason why Sony snatched him up as chairman of Sony Pictures.

But under his tenure (2000-2012), these were the superhero films he oversaw:

  • X2 (2003)
  • Daredevil (2003)
  • Elektra (2005)
  • Fantastic Four (2005)
  • X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
  • X-Men: First Class (2011)

That...isn't a good track record. And X2 was greenlit right after the first X-Men film was released in 2000, so I don't even think we can give that to him. Appparently, also, Fox held off on hiring Bryan Singer again for X-Men 3 until he left for Superman Returns. (...I'm not saying this was a bad decision, just that the person they hired to replace him was Brett Ratner. Oh and if it hadn't been for Fox's tight deadlines, they could have gotten Matthew Vaughn to direct X-Men 3 instead.) His best decision was probably hiring Matthew Vaughn to do X-Men: First Class.

Now, Rothman also came aboard Sony just as the deal with Marvel took place, so he never oversaw any of the terrible Spider-Man films. Just...you know, Venom.

I have faith that they'll put Lord and Miller in charge. They trust those guys enough to give them full reign of their Spider-Man side on tv and the animated side. I wouldn't be surprised that they'll make the right call and put them to at least have a hand on their new Spider-Man movie, if not just downright direct the movie.

They'll definitely put them in charge of the animated films, which is guess. But it's the live-action stuff I'm worried about.
