Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Disney is doing a Spider Man thing for their park. They should reconsider the deal...

Also the best parts of Venom were additions by the main actor himself.

Not exactly reassuring there.

It's also worth noting that Sony can't be trusted to their own devices because the last time that happened, we got ASM 2 and Venom.

Technically, the last time they were left to their own devices, we got Spider-Verse, which won a goddamn Oscar.

Considering they'll probably assign Lord and Miller to oversight their universe, we can in fact get a much better product than their previous offers.

[up][up] Yeah, actually, I'm kind of getting tired of people jumping to ITSV as proof that Sony can do Spidey fine.

Yes, ITSV was awesome, but as it stands, it's lightning in a bottle unless the next animated Spidey movie comes out...and we don't have a clue WHEN that's coming.

Also Spider-verse didn't even break 400 million. Compare that to Sony's previous Spider-flops, which at least made 700 million or so, and Spider-verse is in this weird "success but not really" state.

Well, this sucks. Gotta wonder though; how the hell are they gonna explain everything from the previous two films? You can't mention any of the Avengers and stuff, so it's really gonna cause more problems for both in the long term.

Yeah, actually, I'm kind of getting tired of people jumping to ITSV as proof that Sony can do Spidey fine.

Well, then it'd probably be best to not fudge things by saying the last movie they made without Marvel's help was bad.

That's sort of my problem with a lot of fan culture in general. I'd rate Spider-Man 2, Spider-Verse and Logan up there in the top tier echelon of superhero cinema, but for some reason those don't count because they weren't in the MCU. To be frank, while I enjoyed both MCU Spider-Man movies, I'd still put them in the good, not great category.

You know, this is like The Spectacular Spider-Man all over again.

A brilliant, full-of-potential interpretation of Spider-Man, cut short on a Cliffhanger because of Disney/Sony mishandling.

Between Sony and Disney, it looks like Spider is always going to suffer.

[up] x4 Oh, that’s good. At least we aren’t stuck with that cliffhanger being awkwardly ignored or dealt with offscreen.

Still sucks, but if they can actually write him out instead of leaving things hanging, it’ll go a lot more smoothly.

[up] That sucks too.

I am not a big fan of Disney being saints in this narrative. Also the fact that these MCU people need to watch non-MCU stuff.

[up][up][up], [up][up]I've seen some analysts suggest that Disney was happy to have the story get out because it ensures regardless of what actually happened, the fans will immediately assume it's all Sony's fault, and lo and behold that's exactly what's happening on social media.

Now if talks ever do resume Disney has the added leverage of being able to say there's a clear public outcry for Spidey to stay in the MCU, as well as a documented skepticism of Sony's ability to handle his future.

If the rest of the MCU can't be acknowledged anymore in SM movies, maybe it's a good thing. As someone said earlier, Tony Stark loomed over the first two films, so maybe this can be a chance for SM to stand on his own.

I do like the idea of Peter being put in a witness protection program.
