Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Eh, they're a race of naturally born warriors with a practically unlimited supply of power ups.

Like, the majority of them are dicks and arguably Freiza did the universe a favor by blowing up their planet but there is a reason he kept three Saiyans around as henchmen.

Actually, an enemy with a Saiyan-like approach to battle might make for an interesting enemy for Carol or Thor.

Yeah but most saiyans weren't much to talk about. Nappa was an elite and he was like 5000 importance points.

Also: they worked in squads if Bardock means jack anything. So this whole thing about 'i fight alone because grr my saiyan pride i wish i were a carrot' Vegeta just made up to feel better about himself and then Goku bought into because Goku wanted to blame his selfish decision making on genetics.

Pride in a lineage that everybody thinks doesn’t matter because it’s the one thing they have: Vegeta and danerys have that in common.

[up][up]Wasn't Bardock supposed to be a scrub by Saiyan standards? Even then he still gave Freiza a tough time.

Nappa killed Tien and Yamcha back when those guys actually mattered.

I think the way Vegeta interprets it, his Saiyan pride is more about finding and beating a worthy opponent not fighting alone per say.

[up]Saiyans at least aren't incestuous. Gotta give them credit there.

They say he was a scrub but also he had an importance number of 10,000. Which is higher than Actual Elite Nappa so who the hell knows.

Anyway, I kinda regret Tony's death, because we have the Xmen and the FF coming, and with a lot of older Avengers either dead or retired, we'll never see them interact with that particular bunch now...

...come to think of it, has Tony ever teamed with any Xmen...beyond the ones who themselves became Avengers?

You could probably find a two-in-one or marvel teamup or issue of his own where he did.

I know theres an issue where the Avengers and X-Men fight Magneto. And an issue where Typhon makes Iron Man fight the Champions and then everyone teams up to kick Typhon's head in. Probably lots more.

Tony once teamed up with a certain mutant associated with furry tree-dwelling rodents.

No, that's Deadpool.

Who, fun fact, also isn't a mutant! The movie simplified his origin to "Ajax activated his recessive mutant gene," as the movies often do.

Wade Wilson is a normal everyday f*ckoff human who signed up for the Weapon X super-soldier program because cancer. The program gave him super-cancer and implanted Wolverine's healing factor in his body through Super-Science.

The reason his entire body looks like saggy testicle flesh is because he's a normal guy who has Wolverine's Healing Factor, but whose body is riddled with accelerated cancer. And the cancer has Wolverine's Healing Factor too.

It's actually really appropriate that the second movie pit him against the Juggernaut. Like Wade, the Juggernaut - normal f*ckoff human imbued with the power of Cyttorak, an infernal Hell lord devil - also got dumbed down to "Totes a mutant" in adaptation to avoid having to explain all that shit.

Man, now that Marvel has their rights, the X-movies are gonna get wild. I eagerly look forward to the addition of the Shi'ar Empire, the Brood, the infernal plane Limbo where Colossus's demon sister resides.... It's gonna be a trip.

According to Variety, there are currently "debates" about whether Deadpool can switch from the R-rated solo movies to PG-13 team-ups.

I hope that if we have to have X-Men we get all the weirdery that Fox was afraid of.

But we never got Cap Wolf. Or Throg. So. Be cautiously optimistic.

"Hear from sources that there are debates about whether Deadpool can move seamlessly between R-rated solo outings and PG-13 rated MCU movies."

If he can't, then he can't appear in team up movies or crossovers because Disney Marvel isn't going to up the rating of everyone else for him.

Deadpool should be just fine in PG-13. He doesn’t require R rating to work, and really the first movie was the only point where I think the R rating was necessary.

There was barely any reason for Deadpool 2 to be rated R. It felt a lot more like they were adding things to justify an R rating than needing one to tell the story they wanted like the first one.

I am 100% fine with Deadpool bouncing between R-rated solo films and PG-13 rated guest spots and team-ups. Because it gives him the opportunity to make jokes about having to tone himself down for the PG-13 appearances.

  • Deadpool: WHY YOU MOTHER—
  • Deadpool stops midsentence. Leans over to his left, looking up. The film's MPAA rating slides into view in the top-left corner
  • Deadpool: You are a very mean person and I did not appreciate that. Please allow me to share my feelings. WITH VIOLENCE!!!

EDIT: "Disney better get a discretion shot ready for what I'm about to do to him."
