Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Chitauri gained the reputation as the suckiest army in the galaxy because they failed to take over a backwater planet in the middle of who knows where. The Other seemed to talk rather highly of them. Then again, that could be the Other's bias towards them. Not to mention, the Chitauri were present on Gamora's homeworld, executing half the population.
It could just be that Rocket is running his mouth.
I mean why would Thanos waste a good army on a backwater planet when a sucky one would ordinarily do the job?
This song needs more love.Rocket seems to think it's Common Knowledge that the Chitauri are a Keystone Army, and you could assume that other forces were able to exploit that weakness before. What's missing from the scene is that it's forgetting that they were invading from a Tesseract portal, so it's less that the Avengers are morons for not targeting an obvious weakness and more that they were being attacked from beyond typical engagement range. Tony going through the portal with a nuke was more of a happy accident that resolved the problem.
Thor should have known that though.
Maybe he slacked off on Chitauri tactics.
Anyway, notice it's Tony who silences Rocket there. Not a shock though: would you want someone laughing about something that nearly got you killed?
One Strip! One Strip!Twitter explodes over a fake Joe Russo quote

Mysterio must’ve done this.

Those comment, christ.
Fans (unsurprisingly, a lot of shippers) are even more mad now.
Anyway I'm interested in what they mean by that. Did they actually have concrete plans for how to kill Tony off in Civil War? Or was it just an idea of his floating around that never made it to the writing stage?

I don't understand why MCU Peter is seen in fanfiction, especially on Tumblr and AO 3, as someone who's easily hurt and needs comforting from Tony. Peter Parker Angst or Hurt/Comfort is practically a genre unto its own, granted, but it didn't become prevalent like it is now until the MCU version.
The Protomen enhanced my life. There's a lot of MCU fanfics using that Spider-Man/Power Pack PSA comic as backstory/a vehicle for hurt/comfort too.
EDIT: "1 - 20 of 3896 Works in Tony Stark Acting as Peter Parker's Parental Figure"
1 - 20 of 3901 Works in Peter Parker Needs a Hug" (FOUR of those were written pre-MCU. FOUR.)

The Protomen enhanced my life.I'm gonna say that second scene was also best left on the cutting room floor.
Officially declaring the Chitauri to be the shittiest army in the galaxy creates a bit of a narrative disconnect. Because the Chitauri are Thanos's army, and we've been told repeatedly that Thanos is, like, the scariest asshole in the universe.
It's hard to reconcile the scariest asshole in the universe being in command of the shittiest garbage-mooks ever made. Once again, this undermines important elements of the franchise. We can criticize the Chitauri all we want as fans, but within the context of the work, we're supposed to be afraid of the Chitauri.
We're supposed to be impressed by the Avengers' miraculous victory against the Chitauri.
Because the Chitauri are Thanos's forces, and their performance reflects directly on him. And we're supposed to be afraid of Thanos.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Part of it is just that people that don’t read comics are being exposed to the character through the MCU. There are the Raimi movies and the Amazings but they didn’t occupy as much public attention as the MCU as a whole
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI mean, I totally buy the joke about Civil War. When it first came out I said that movie was totally sending up red flags foreshadowing his death in an upcoming movie, and people said I was crazy.
As soon as they gave him a dramatic monologue where he says he can't stop being Iron Man because deep down he doesn't want to stop, the "Oh, he's gonna die stopping Thanos" lightbulb clicked in my head.

Ugh, yes. Need to remember I can block the "whump" tag when I'm searching that section.
I've seen the same kind of thing in other fandoms on AO3. First one that comes to mind is the My Hero Academia section with Midoriya, although I've definitely seen other cases. I think the Final Fantasy XV fandom does it with a few characters? Don't know if they still do.
I mean, I know hurt/comfort is a thing, and that writing characters into horrible situations can make for really interesting stories if it's done well, but it starts to get weird when there's that much of it out there. I guess some writers really like torturing their favorites.

Heh.
Then maybe it's just Rocket running his mouth. That makes more sense. This is the guy who was insulting babies after all. He's not a nice dude.
Also, it might be that the Chitauri underwent Memetic Loser status after the failure on Earth.
