Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

The worst? Let's see...
1) He falls off the wagon again and wrecks the WH in a drunken frenzy in his suit.
2) He declares war on Latveria due to his on and off rivalry with Doom over whose suit is better reaching a breaking point.
3) He gets caught with his pants down with not just one intern but all the interns.
4) He becomes a micromanaging boss from hell who tries to take over all the responsibilities of the Cabinet.
5) He gives too many tax breaks and lowers regulations for Silicon Valley.
Disgusted, but not surprised
Yes, that one. And I was in Joking Mode. Of course nobody in his right mind would want to adapt this crap.
I haven't read this book but for some reason this sounds tame compared to what Ennis usually writes. Is there anything in particular I should be wary of?

You mean aside from the usual grimdark stuff? Well, let's see... it rewrites the way magic works in this setting for the sole purpose of humiliating Thor, the main villain is a giant Villain Sue who only ends up losing because the story required him to, and the other Avengers get defeated offscreen. Hope that helps^^
Pretty much the only person who defends it is Garth Ennis. Most fans don't like it. Hell, most of Marvel's writers don't like it. To the point they have pretty much never acknowledged it as canon.
Yet he must have fans, because I don't see any other explanation why he still gets job or why two of his comics are getting adapted into series. Personally I hate that guy and everything he stands for (primarily because he hates and shits on everything I love), but eh.
On a sidenote, I personally feel that premise could have actually been good had it been handled by anyone else. I mean, on paper, Thor fighting zombie vikings sounds badass... oh, wait.

Yeah, he has fans...but even they probably wouldn't defend that particular story much.
And of course he has fans. Some of his stuff is actually pretty good. Heck, I'm not a fan of his, and I actually still like most of Preacher.
The Boys is however a garbage fire.

I hate it, but admittedly that's mostly because I hate stories where God Is Evil.
Wait what?! They renewed it already?! But season 1 hasn't even come out yet as far as I know...
The Viatnam arc of Punisher MAX was pretty neat.
Other than that, I can't talk much about his work. I mind neither grimdark nor gore, and as a SMT and general JRPG fan I have high tolerance for anti-religion themes, but the sheer amount of preaching the guy gets up to is a complete turnoff.
I hate, hate, hate when I'm experimenting any work of fiction and I start feeling it's preaching at me. I wanted to be preached at, I'd go to mass, goddamnit!
(The irony of a Catholic man complaining about preaching is very much noted)
Re: whether Stark is an enrironmentalist: Only in the same sense as people backing carbon sequestration. That is, he wants (and makes) tech-based solutions to the climate crisis, and since he exists in a fictional world, that’s sufficient.
There’s no indication of whether he’d support the coordinated government action, regulations, and sacrifices that would, in the real world, be needed to make any substantive process.
I agree that he’d vote for Trump - at least, the Stark we see in the first two phases of the MCU certainly would. They’re both anti-government billionaires with garish taste who don’t respect women and have egos the size of Ego the Living Planet. Trump is basically Tony Stark’s id.

@Hail Muffins: Oh, you're Catholic too? Nice^^ I wish I had your tolerance for anti-religious themes, though. It's kind of a Berserk Button for me.

Jesus, why do Trump always get compared to cool people despite being such a joke?

I was one of those dickhead Hollywood Atheist types back in highschool.
It's, uhm,not a time of my life I look back fondly, and frankly that's about the least of it.
As for Trump/Tony, I respectfully disagree: Tony wouldn't want to vote at all. The man was so self-centered back in the first movie I doubt he could spend so much as a second to think about anything else other than his projects and how he'd get wasted that evening.
Pepper pretty much ran the company already at that point, remember, and after Stane died she was the de facto CEO.

Traits in fictional characters that seem fun would in real life be associated with narcissism or sociopathic behavior.
Case in point - Zack Morris.

That's actually something that came up in the comics. The government wanted Rhodey to run for President because they were really worried Tony would run for President someday and win based on his superhero cred. And they knew he'd be a disaster.
