Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I too would put Killian over Malekith. As much as Killian devolved into a boring cliche by the end, he did devolve. The first half or so of the movie, where he's this enigmatic head of a mysterious conspiracy involving fake terrorists and mad science and all that good stuff was pretty engaging - enough that you can almost put aside the crap about his needless lust over Pepper or his tacked on Syndrome-lite reason for hating Tony.
But then he turns into Snidely Whiplash and all that good will gets punted out a window. But still, he had a good start. It's like Electro from Amazing Spider-Man 2: stuck the liftoff expertly, almost managed the flight, screwed up the landing and plopped into the toilet bowl instead.
Meanwhile, Malekith is just bad from start to finish, with everything that might have been engaging drained off in favor of what I could only assume were ill-advised attempts an attempt to make him more intimidating. And I'm still pissed off about Kurse.
I think what puts even Malekith over Steppenwulf, even though they share problems, is that while he's a pretty bland villain, what he does do and the kind of scenes he's involved with are still fun to watch and cool to follow. Black hole grenades? Invisible starfighters? A freaking teleport-spam final battle? Neat. Steppenwulf meanwhile is a conglomeration of muted tones and substance-less visuals that just... doesn't make an impression. At all.

I guess another thing with Steppenwolf is that Justice League came out in 2017, the same year that saw the MCU give us Ego, Adrian Toomes, AND Hela. And the Grandmaster. They're uh, a fair step up.
Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)Electro started out really, really well. An interesting introduction. An unsettling characterization, but still pitiable with a sympathetic origin. A first fight that's visually and character-wise very cool, tragic but shows off a lot of both characters. The scene at Duffy Square is one of the better scenes in the ASM series (which, even as maligned as those movies are, is saying something - some of the scenes in those films are damn good).
But right after that point, ASM 2 starts running full force into what turned out to be its biggest problem: it wants to do all the things, and drops developing the things it already has adequately in order to get all the things out there. So like a light switch, offscreen Electro instantly goes from sympathetic dude going through a superpowered nervous breakdown to "don't you know? I'm Electro," ranting about yadda yadda replace Spider-Man, and trying to take over the city.
Like Killian, what made him interesting disappears halfway through the plot in favor of making him more by numbers.

Electro’s starting scenes as an unlucky nerd can feel too comical, while his flip into an intimidating doomsday villain feels abrupt. Then he gets crowded out by Harry Goblin.
I personally felt TASM Electro’s conceptual foundation was good. He had an tragic core of someone who is afraid of being ignored by the world and then decides to crush it after all it’s put him through. But they played it too heavyhanded, and then he gets disposed of without an ounce of sympathy toward his mistreated life.

Malekith in the comics is a gleefully malevolent trickster, very much The Joker as an elf. I have no idea why Movie!Malekith was so devoid of personality.
Perhaps they thought it would make him too similar to Loki.
Too busy, didn't click: James Gunn established that GOTG Vol. 3 is happening after he finishes his DC movie The Suicide Squad. A tweeter asked if Thor will be a part of "it" without specifying either GOTG Vol. 3 or TSS. Gunn exploited this and confirmed Thor won't appear in The Suicide Squad.
...Thor's appearing in Vol. 3, isn't he?
I still kind of like Killian if only because the actor really sells the slimy, Smug Snake characterization of the character.
Far as villains in the MCU goes, for me it's a tie between Malekith and Abomination. And I also never been particularly fond of Obadiah Stane either.
On the "Thor in Guardians" question: Gunn has confirmed that Love and Thunder takes place prior to Guradians 3
, so what Thor would be like in Guardians is still up in the air. Also, given The Suicude Squad is still in development and Guardians will production as soon as that's finished, Gunn may not have a full story idea quite yet.
Gunn had at least a completed first draft of Vol 3's Script before he was "fired" and some pre-production was in the works for Vol 3 as well. Given that he DID have access to the story line and scripts for IW and Endgame as a Producer there's a chance he knew about Thor being added to the Guardians before hand and worked that into the script.
So it's a safe bet that the Got G will be mentioned in Love and Thunder if we don't have full blown cameos, but up in the air if he'll rejoin the Got G post Love and Thunder. But given we have time before Got G 3 starts filming he might be tweeking the script for Love and Thunder

The real Malekith was busy, the guy who filled in for him was a Skrull
Just like how The Mandarin was played by imposter
Or you can blame executive meddling that resulted in his personalty being left on the cutting room floor
have a listen and have a link to my discord server All the villains where skrulls and thats why they're angry with the Avengers and are going with a Secret Invasion.
OK,I found Spiderman's next villain
Villain with a thing for portals, and a cool looking costume

He's the only character I can actually see gleefully peeing into a jar and gently placing it on a Senator's desk.
And if you think I'm making that shit up, watch Batman v Superman and you'll see that yes he actually placed a jar of pee on her desk so he must have done that.
