Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Aren't the Celestials people like that one person in Guardians of the Galaxy that used the Power Stone to destroy a planet?

Nowhere was the hollowed out head of a Celestial, and Ego was a Celestial.

Related doublepost: sometimes I wonder if they'll ever reference the big ol' hills of Celestial Ego flesh that exist on thousands of planets across the universe.

IIRC it was his continuing inference, with Civil War being the breaking point, you can see the cracks before that in IM 3, Dark World, Ao U and Antman, where there was EPIC amounts of meddling that altered the final form of all of those films.

Like Iron Man 3 was supposed to have a female villain and Dark World originally had Patty Jenkins directing.

Wait, was Patty Jenkins not developing anyway?

But yeah, I bet that any other villain would have been better than Killian. One of the worst MCU villains I think.

Malekith and Killian are in their eternal race for dead-last of MCU villains, but if you ask me, at least Malekith has a mildly interesting design as opposed to Killian (who's literally just a white guy in a suit in every sense of the word).

Phase 2 was...not particularly good about villains, sans maybe Alexander Pierce/HYDRA and I guess whatever Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had to offer.

Yeah Malekith actually had potential but alas he was just another example of Thor 2 fucking itself in its ass.

Killian on the other hand gets increasingly nonsensical the more you think about it.

[up] Oh poor Ultron, what a punk-ass.

I prefer Killian over Malekith. At least Killian had cool powers, a decent scheme, and a good final battle even if his characterization was bland. Malekith was just dull in every sense of the word.

His powers were just glowing red & producing heat.

Not exactly a cool power-set.

I thought his powers were cool looking and challenging for Iron Man without being a clone of him again, but the character behind it was boring.

Anyway, James Gunn confirms Thor will not be in his superhero movie.

Apparently Vuk has challenged Malekith and Killian for the title of worst superhero movie villain out there. Probably fitting, since I've heard very little good about that movie.

Does anyone remember that time they made Lex Luthor a Jim Carrey impression of Mark Zuckerberg or did I imagine that.

Dismissing the powerset as "glowing red and producing heat" is kinda disingenuous. Heating parts of his body to throw out titanium-splitting punches, chops, and kicks like those thousand-degree knife videos, and regenerating from injuries is pretty cool to see in live-action in my opinion.

I can't say that BVS Lex was the worst villain, because Jesse Eisenberg was just having so much fun playing him as, basically, a cartoon character.

Plus, the post-credits scene to Justice League was just delightful, even though I know it will go nowhere:

He was somehow more cartoonish than an actual cartoon Luthor. Every sentence out of Eisen-Lex felt like it made less sense than the next.
