Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Issues with the comics run aside: MCU Jane Foster is an incredibly talented astrophysicist, but she's just not a warrior
Neither was Comics Jane, but she was still the best person for the job. Being a "warrior" isn't a requirement; all you have to be is worthy.

MCU Jane Foster is an incredibly talented astrophysicist, but she's just not a warrior.

She can be both. Iron Man is, after all, as much identifiably a scientist and engineer as he is a dude who shoots missiles at tanks.

Eternals: really like the cast; was surprised with Jolie being Thena and Makkari/Ajak being portrayed by women.

Sprite was gender flipped too.

wonder if the true Mandarin is gonna be a villain this time and I can't help but think how they wasted the opportunity to make him interact with Stark...

It's probably for the best that he was never used for Stark.

The Blade movie better be Rated R and Wesley Snipes better make a cameo.

Holy shit, my (stolen) theory about the Celestials descending on ancient Earth to create the Deviants, Eternals, and Mutants might actually come true.

Hopefully, they don't do the Jason Aaron explanation about a Celestial vomiting which gave rise to superhuman abilities on Earth.

Nice, very Kirby-esque. Although I'd also like them to be more eyepopping.

I hope there's Kirby Dots everywhere.

Frankly, I'm not feeling it with Jane, I'd rather Sif got to be the new Thor.

Except the female Thor is Jane and Sif is already a god.

Besides, we don't even know if Sif will be back.

I’m hoping that they intoduce mutants via the multiverse - i.e., mutants don’t exist on MCU’s Earth-616, but they do exist on another Earth. That lets Marvel do occasional crossovers while also enabling the X-Men to have independent stories and story arcs that aren’t tied to the Avengers.

The news about Zemo being in the Falcon and Winter Soldier show means that I’ll end up subscibing to Disney+ for at least a couple months. Will probably catch the Loki show as well. I figured it would be about the Loki who escaped with the Tesseract, and I like the concept of him zipping around time and space causing trouble. It’s like an evil version of Doctor Who!

For the movies, the 2020 ones don’t catch my interest, but the 2021 ones all do.

Female Thor is Jane in the comics.

The MCU has never been a 1:1 adaptation, how shit is done in the comics stopped being a valid argument a long time ago.

And she's Thor in the film. So clearly it is valid. The how she becomes Thor might change but it's still Jane.

I’m hoping that they intoduce mutants via the multiverse

I doubt it. They'll probably just say they have always been there and just in hiding.

It wouldn't be the first time Mutants hid from humans.

[up][up] I'm aware. I read them. I personally think MCU Valkyrie is a more interesting character, but I guess it's a bit unfair to judge Jane on the first two Thor movies, as Ragnarok was certainly in another league. The fact that she doesn't need to be a warrior is a valid point. I will update my statement to "in their current states, I would be more excited for Valkyrie-centric movies than Jane-centric movies," but there's definitely room for development and I'm sure Taika Waititi will treat the character with the respect she deserves.

I'm not sweet on MCU Jane, but I also thought MCU Thor was kinda eh for a while before Ragnarok completely turned me around on him as a character. So I think it's entirely possible they could really rescue Jane from the Scrappy Heap as well.

Especially since it's obvious Natalie Portman was not the problem. She's a fantastic actress who has done wonderful work elsewhere. Jane, as written in the first two movies, was just kinda flat and got Strangled by the Red String.

In fact the reason Natalie came back is likely the fact that Jane won't be just a love interest.

Sprite was gender flipped too.

True, but I never really cared about him anyway, so...

About the Celestials, I was expecting something... shinier, or more Kirby-ish. But I suppose this works too.

... And that's called jazz!

That is just concept art, the Celestials might look different in the film itself.
