Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Peter B was meant to be the actual Raimi Spidey at some point, but Sony thought viewers would be too dumb to wrap their mind around the idea, so they dropped it.
edit: Damn it!

If Peter B is Raimi....are they trying to say the other Peter is Webb Spiderman?
Cause that would take guts?
One Strip! One Strip!I just headcanon Peter B. Parker as Jewish considering the actor and him crushing a wine glass at his wedding. I guess it would've been cool to hear Tobey or Andrew in this but I'm content with Jake Johnson.
Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)RE: Directing MCU!Blade: While I love GDT thanks to Pacific Rim and Hellboy 1 and he's had experience with the character via Blade II, I can't help but wonder if he'll end up wanting to move away from the intricate plotting the MCU has become famous for.
My ideal choice of director (as I mentioned more than once here) would be Jordan Peele since he's already made headlines with having African-American led horror movies, namely Get Out and Us (there's also the bonus of having both movies being led by actors who have spots in the MCU). So after dealing with brainwashing cults and imposter clones, vampire hunting sounds like a logical next step for Peele. But even then, I'm wondering if he'd be too much of an auteur-type to stick with stuff Marvel Studios wants and would rather create original movie instead of just adaptations of established IP.
Then again, maybe someone completely different will be the director. So...
It's not entirely without precedent for Spider-Man to be Jewish.
One of the most well-known renditions of the character is Brian Michael Bendis's Ultimate Spider-Man. While Ultimate Peter was never stated to be Jewish, he had a tendency to use a lot of Yiddish terms under Bendis's pen.
Andrew Garfield has also stated that he considers the character to be Jewish.

First io9, now here. Jordan Peele's name came out so many times tonight I could've made a Drinking Game out of it it.
That said, he could indeed be a good choice to direct it.

It's weird. I hate The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as much as the next person, but reading what you just said makes me want to reject it completely.
Maybe because there are still things I like in the movie and I refuse to throw them out, even if I'm pissed about a lot of other things in it. Same for the first movie.
I say, as long as it's not as bad as Spider-Man 3 X3, X-Men Origins: Wolverine or (as of recently) Dark Phoenix, nothing deserves to be thrown out.
Hell, I'll still defend Iron Fist for Danny's improved character in Luke Cage season 2 and season 2 of his own series (plus making Colleen the fist at the end).
I won't throw out the baby with the bath water, even if that baby is a zombie vampire gnawing at my groin.
One Strip! One Strip! It’s really interesting: looking back at the 2014 Phase 3 announcement, Feige and Marvel announced movies for the next five years. But those plans then changed — drastically in some cases — and movies shifted around and three movies were added to the line-up (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Spider-Man: Far From Home) while one was dropped (Inhumans). And over the years, I think Kevin Feige looked back on that big five year announcement as a mistake.
So this year, instead of a five year announcement, it was only a two year announcement. Only 2020 and 2021. Nothing further than that. And yet, they still announced five films and four TV shows and dropped a bombshell with Blade. So the impact was the same, but the time-frame was smaller, so they could make sure that the same shifts or unplanned adding/dropping of films couldn’t happen.
Very smart.

You and I seem to share the same approach, ironically enough.
I'm fine with condemning movies for what they do wrong. But I hate those who use the latter to downplay anything they get right. Nothing's all black & white: there's always room for nuanced criticism.
One example: Wesley Snipes might not be fit to play Blade anymore, but he can still play a character in the Reboot. See? I recognize his flaws, while aknowledging his qualities.

Word of God is that every version of Peter is Jewish, at least in regards to Into the Spider-Verse. It specifically came up because RIPeter was buried in a famous Christian cemetery, and people were wondering if there were Unfortunate Implications that the cool and perfect Peter is Christian, while the depressed and slovenly Peter is Jewish. Turns out it's just that cemetery is really famous (a famous Revolutionary War hero is buried there, but I forget which one), so he was buried there as a show of respect to Spider-Man.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Speaking as a Jew, I can confirm that there are a lot of Jewish themes and ideas woven into the very essence of Spider-Man, he always spoke to me in that way, even way back in the Silver Age comics.
So, let's clear something up: it is not confirmed whether or not Natalie Portman as Jane Foster as Thor is going to be Valkyrie's new love interest in Thor: Love and Thunder, right?
I'm gonna second the idea that Mandarin having Magitek Powered Armor like the one from Armored Adventures would be badass.
That armor also served to make Mandarin's true identity something of a mystery at first, which could be handy in the movie.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSome more interesting thoughts about Phase 4 so far:
- All the movies announced have already had directors hired, unlike in 2014, when the Phase 3 announcement only had directors for about half the films. Which means that, unlike in 2014 when Feige basically just announced the names of the films and then brought out Chris Evans and RDJ, he as able to bring out the directors for each of the films he announced, alongside one or more actors cast in the film. This announcement was definitely planned out better than the 2014 one.
- We are getting another mix of genres. Black Widow is a spy film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a martial arts epic, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a horror film, and Thor: Love and Thunder is another comedy.
- The incorporation of the Disney+ shows means that Marvel Studios can essentially double their output without adding more to their film slate or diluting the brand.
- Movies without a release date: Guardians vol 3, Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, The Fantastic Four, and Blade. That's five films — which means another two years. Those are probably the films for 2022-2023 — and you'll notice that the include two new films and three sequels, as opposed to 2020-2021, which is two sequels, two new films, and one film about an already established character.
- Which means we're probably either going to get the X-Men in 2024 or get a Disney+ show about them. I would love it if I could pitch my version of an X-Men show.

To be honest, I didn't get the same hype or sense of wonder as I did after seeing the Phase 3 announcement. My thoughts:
- Black Widow. Solo, Part 2. Seriously? Another origin story for a character who just got killed off in the previous (sequel) film? This should have been a retool with another character stepping up to take Natasha's place. Her story is done. Budapest was an amusing Running Gag/Noodle Incident, and now gets its own film? What's the point? (EDIT) Apparently, there are people online hoping they bring her back to life? After Endgame unequivocally stated that there was no way to bring her back with the Stones?
- The Eternals. If they can do a better job of it than The Inhumans, I'm all for it. Perhaps this is a course correction.
- Shang-Chi. My knowledge of the character is limited, but if they can do some Arc Welding and do a better job of The Mandarin/link to the Ten Rings after IM1/IM3 and the one-shot they did with the fake Mandarin getting busted out of prison by the real Mandarin, I'm all for it.
- Doctor Strange 2: Love the fact that Wanda's in. Not sure how I feel about it being a glorified teaser for her TV show. Granted, the whole TV and film division rivalry (with neither really mentioning one another besides the odd guest cameo) sucked, but I doubt I'm going to be watching any of the Disney shows after they cancelled the Netflix stable.
- Thor 4: I'll believe Natalie Portman can do a good job when I see the film. She was the worst part of Thor 1 and 2 — blank stares, weak responses, and she looked like she just didn't want to be there in 2 (and no, Ike Perlmutter is not a reason to give a bad performance). The logo looks rad, though, and I'm confident that the humor will at least match Ragnarok.
- Hawkeye: HELL. YES. Renner should have had his own solo film in Phase 2 or 3. This is long overdue.
- Fantastic Four': Should be kept on ice for a few more years. The Trank version did horrible damage to the brand, and it's been on diminishing returns ever since 2005. If they are going to bring it back, they'll need one hell of a reason and a kickass villain — give me someone besides Galactus or Doom, please.
- Blade: One of my favorite superhero films of all time — I was rocking that and II on DVD in the early 00's, so it holds a special place in my heart. I loved Ali on Luke Cage, but you need someone with the physicality to portray an immortal vampire hunter. Snipes had it. Kirk Jones had it. So far, I buy Ali more as the calculating, methodical type more than I do a badass action hero. Unfortunate about Snipes not coming back, but his primadonna behavior on Blade: Trinity is almost legendary at this point — I'm not surprised.
- What If?: I happen to own a number of the old issues, which were almost mind-boggling in how wild they were (things like "What would happen if Dark Phoenix didn't die?"). If they had a functionally-unlimited budget to do some of the wacky things these comics portrayed, I'd be down, but I suspect (a) this is being done on a TV budget, so mostly small-scale alternate-universe stories, and (b) there isn't much budget to get many of the marquee actors, which means a comparatively-limited focus.

I have faith that Natalie Portman will do a good job as Thor.
Probably the things I'm looking forward to most are Shang-Chi, the Hawkeye show (I love Matt Fraction's run) and Love and Thunder.

This song needs more love.

Isn't Peter B almost literally Tobyman but Jewish?
