Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm hoping we'll get a full Phase 4 line-up video, like they did for Phase 3. Obviously, Phase 3 went through a few changes in the process, but it still lines up basically the same, just a little shuffling around and Inhumans replaced with Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Of course, we sort of already know half of the Phase 4 movies, since we know about Eternals, Dr. Strange 2, Black Widow, Guardians 3, and Shang-Chi. I think, of the ones we know about, Thor 4 is definitely not in Phase 4, it's just way too early in production. I dunno what's going on with Black Panther 2 and Power Pack, I could see either of them being in Phase 4, but we haven't heard much about them recently, which makes me think they might be further off than we think.

Either last year or earlier this year, I believe.

There's also the Marvel shows, which can rule out some potential movies we didn't already know about: Falcon and Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki.

As far as movies we don't officially know about for Phase 4, I'm predicting Avengers 5 (duh), Namor, and let's go with She-Hulk, as a wild-card.

Honestly, I have no idea which Phase 4 movie will be first, though I'm betting on Dr. Strange 2.

Meanwhile, The Russo brothers are going to be doing a supposed Live Action film of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.

Quite the shift from Marvel, but if Advertised properly, I could see it doing very well.

Doctor Strange 2 would probably be the best for set-up of the MCU's future, given the magical side of the MCU is relatively unexplored as of yet, and he can always explore both magic and cosmic (as there is a huge amount of overlap).

We still can't get solo Hulk-series movies, so She-Hulk is out unless they pair her with another character.

[up][up]I just think Dr. Strange 2 is first because I feel like we've known that Nightmare is the villain before we learned any details about any of the other movies.

[up]And She-Hulk falls under that umbrella, huh? Darn.

Avengers: Infinity War lost a scene where Thanos was found cosmically guilty

As reported by several folks in attendence, during the Comic-Con panel today with Avengers writers Christopher Markus and Stephen Mc Feely, the duo revealed that there was originally a scene during that struggle in which Doctor Strange uses his powers to knock Thanos’ mind through a mindscape (think that trippy adventure Strange first went on in his own movie when Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One sent him hurling across the cosmos), where the Titan then ended up in front of The Living Tribunal.

Fans of Marvel comics may know this guy: The Tribunal is an entity as old as the universe itself, one tasked with maintaining balance among the various realities and dimensions of existence. According to Markus and Mc Feely, the Living Tribunal was going to judge Thanos and find him guilty of attempting to upset the cosmic balance. They ended up cutting it because it sapped the pacing from the battle. While they didn’t get into the particulars of where it would’ve gone from there, or how they’d return Thanos’ mind to the fight on Titan (if you’ve read the original Infinity Gauntlet series, you know the encounter with the Tribunal involves a cool moment where they question whose powers are actually superior), it does suggest Marvel was trying to thread in yet more ways to expand the MCU in greater cosmic directions.

I beleive Black Widow, Doctor Strange 2, Guardians 3, Shang-Chi, Thor 4, Black Panther 2 and the Eternals have all been confirmed on some level.

I'll go ahead and add Captain Marvel 2 and Spider-Man 3 as likely additions.

Other possibilities might include something from the Fox properties like Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, maybe even a Doctor Doom movie.

I'll also add Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) to the list as an outside possibility. I do expect her to enter the MCU in Phase 4, but I'm not sure if she'll go straight to having her own movie.

That scene would have killed the pacing but it would have been good to demonstrate unambiguously that Thanos is bugfuck and not in the right at all

You forgot Captain Marvel 2 — after all, the first one made over a billion.

And hell yes, I would have loved to see Thanos be cosmically judged. It would have definitely proven that he was wrong and that he didn't care.

As wild cards, I'll go with MCU!Spider-Man 3, something X-Men related (X-Force?), something Fantastic 4 related, Deadpool 3, and maybe Spider-Man and Deadpool.

I don't think we'll be seeing anything from the Fox merger until Phase 5. Maybe Fantastic 4 after Avengers 5 as a way to end Phase 4, as an Ant-Man/Spider-Man: Far From Home situation. Maybe.

At best, I think we could get Deadpool 3 sloppily retconned into the MCU.

[up][up][up] I think the latter half of Phase 4 will be early enough for some of the Fox properties to find their way into the MCU in a big way. We've had a fair amount of time for them to come up with plans already, and the end of Phase 4 is likely a very long ways off.

Yeah as cool as it would've been to see the Living Tribunal that would've killed the pacing.

Plus they need to establish Eternity and the like before going that big.

You don't need to retcon anything to fit Deadpool into the MCU.

That's the beauty of the character, really: all you need is to transplant him to the new setting as-is and let Ryan machine gun lampshades eveywhere.

It'll make billions.

It turns out that killing Ryan Reynolds before he did Green Lantern transformed his universe into the MCU.
