Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So Thor is already breaking the "3 movies-per-hero" schtick now that Thor 4 is happening. gringringrin

Think we'll see anything regarding:

  • the Guardians of the Galaxy?
  • Beta Ray Bill?
  • Hercules?
  • The time-displaced Loki from 2012 who ran off with the Tesseract thanks to the bungling in Endgame?

For sure, 2012!Loki will probably be surprised that Thor can see through his tricks faster.

As much as I love Loki, seeing Thor in a post Loki world would be interesting.

Thor doesn't have much supporting cast left, he's got Valkyrie, Korg, Miek (who is mute) and maybe Sif if they want to bring her back, so there's loads of space for to add in new or guest characters.

I definatly hope that they keep Thor plus sized for the movie: it's rare to see a hero who looks like that.

Beta Rey Bill and the Enchantress seems like the largest parts of the Thor mythology that's still missing, but honnestly at this point they could throw Thor into MCU plot and it would be enjoyable.

Thor is in a really interesting character place right now, as he's accepted both his responsibility to his people, but also his own limitations. That's an interesting pair of character strengths.

I really want to see New Asgard fleshed and and weird. Why have we not seen gorse sized rabbits yet?

Not sure what plot you could do. The Enchantress is normally a big part of the Masters of Evil and a big player in Thor's rouges gallery, so I feel like she's inevitable, but her plots tend to be a little... Shallow.

(saying that if she tries to seduce Valkyrie to get herself a seat in Asgard's throne room, I would laugh)

I really like the light road trip format of Ragnarok and would happily see that go further. Just romp through the weirdness of Cosmic Marvel.

Since it’s Taika again, I think something light-hearted would be a good call. I felt like the serious content of Ragnarok didn’t mesh well with the light tone. He’s good at comedy, Hemsworth’s good at comedy, and something with lower stakes would fit his style a lot better.

With Hulk's injury and Clint retiring every year, Thor might be the last active founding avenger. I wonder if the plot will do anything about that.

Thor knows to respect his limits now, but is his responsibility to New Asgard, the nine realms, or Earth?

What if the Enchantress doesn't enchant people intimately, but instead, politically, pushing a nationalistic ideology onto people. It would fit with the themes of Ragnarock.

And it would allow an in for Beta Rey Bill, because he intersects with Thor but has literally no ties to the nine realms at all.

The enchantress portrays Bill as being an enemy who is stealing New Asgard resources in an attempt to make Thor and Valkyrie more isolationist because she can't deal with being a member of a city state on the back of midgard. Also she starts off as Valkyrie's consort and spymaster.

I'd like Lady Sif to feature but I'm not sure how.

Not sure what cool Marvel destinations I'd like Thor to visit. The savage land is always fun, especially when it's thematically nonsense to go there. Groot's homeworld is pretty bonkers. We've not actually been to Helheim yet. Cate Blanchet would kill a cameo. There's a watcher Palace on the moon, and suposably a bunch of Inhumans you could get away with recasting.

Huh. You're right. He is the only active OG Avenger left.

But that's only if Hawkeye and Hulk are really done. It's hard to say if Clint is as adverse to permanently retiring as Tony was, and whether Hulk's arm heals or not (and whether that really stops him) is up in the air.

As for his responsibility: as long as New Asgard is on Earth, he can just check off all of the above.

Agreed. Fat Thor with the armor and braided beard is legit the best he's EVER looked in the entire MCU, and the most he's looked the part of a Norse god.

If they keep Thor chubby, Hemsworth should actually gain the weight. The fat suit looked really fake.

I don't expect them to go as far as keeping fat Thor or forcing Hemsworth to eat more and avoid exercising if it requires active effort for him to gain that much extra weight, but I do at least expect them to lay off on the restrictive dieting and physique that he's openly complained about. So most likely we'll end up with Dadbod Thor.

[up]Probably a halfway point, where he gets in better shape, but that means a more natural physique as opposed to the heavy dieting where one is mostly eating steamed vegetables and chicken breasts.

FWIW, Hemsworth does have a fitness app he lends his name and face to, so I think the natural body makes a lot of sense since it’s a lot healthier to maintain vs the physique you need heavy dieting for.

Male actors should not have to be so dehydrated that they are one day away from Total Organ Failure and need to be hospitalized immediately after the shoot just so they can look more buff on camera.

None of what I said is an exaggeration at all, by the way. That is literally what these actors have to do.

To look like Thor, you take Chris Hemsworth, who is already a god among men, and then SQUEEEEZE all the juice out of him. Then you get one day of shooting out of him and he has to go to the hospital.

I may or may not be seeing Far From Home again on Thursday, this time with my mom since she didn't see it the first time. We've got a matter to attend to beforehand that day so we'll see if we're both up to it afterward.

It's partially the fault of movies for forcing actors to be that unreasonably fit and perpetuating the idea that that kind of body is normal and attainable. It's become a vicious cycle: actors are forced to get buff to look good for the camera, which makes the audience think it's normal and they demand actors to get buff.

It’s heavily the fault of movies. No film should force an actor to be unhealthy to meet some kind of unrealistic beauty standard, whether it’s thinness in women or musculature in men. In superhero movies it seems to be the norm.

Part of that though is also the fault of the source material, at least in the case of superhero movies.

Unrealistic beauty standards are definitely bad, but at least a drawing isn’t a person. There’s a distinction between drawing unrealistic-looking characters versus trying to force actual people to look that way.

Both the former and the latter can have harmful effects on a societal level, but the latter also directly harms specific individuals.
