Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

There was also that time Spider-Man beat the shit out of Firestar(?), a Herald of Galactus with similar power level to the freaking Silver Surfer.

They didn't even bother handwaving that one.

I think it's Firelord, Firestar is the mutant woman from the old cartoon.

Thanos has always been too tricky for his own good. If he'd never come up with the idea for the Infinity Gauntlet and invented Snaps, he and his forces would still exist today.

The Silver Surfer is weird. He’s supposed to have cosmic level power, but thanks to popularity he’s also to interact with loads of the Marvel universe evenly. So sometimes that cosmic power goes out the window to serve the story.

But speaking of Firestar, I really want her in the MCU.

Like, since introducing the Human Torch is a bit weird right now, they could have her be the “fire themed hero friend to Spidey” a la the Silver Age. Ultimate Firestar was Liz Allan, which would work (especially if they play up the “daughter of a supervillain” angle as part of her motivation), but since original Firestar was effectively an OC she’s basically a cipher, really.

I’ve been thinking they could even make Michelle Firestar in this continuity. Now that would be really cool.

MJ or Liz as Firestar would be great.

I think I might just hate fun. I dunno. Cuz I get the joke, it just doesn't sound funny. Like I get the joke of One Punch Man but it just feels like thumbscrews.
I highly recommend reading Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, because that gives you a much better picture of why Squirrel Girl is so fun and unbeatable. There's even an issue where she goes to fight Galactus...and then cuts right after the fight to show her saying, "Well, that wasn't so hard." Cue the letters to the editor and the rest of the issue is blank pages. Not really, they actually go back and explain what really happened and no, Squirrel Girl didn't really defeat Galactus, she just befriended him.

There's also a page where Loki turns his head into Cat Thor and it's both hilarious and awesome and I love it forever.

She truly is wonderful.

Black Panther once immobilized the actual Silver Surfer by putting him in an armlock.

I believe that in this instance there was a handwave, that Silver Surfer let Black Panther win so he could find out what he wanted.

Black Panther once punched out the Tiger god of fear so he could punch out the combined cosmic force of Master Order and Master Chaos who even Galactus couldn't defeat on his own.

[up]x8: Ultimate MJ was one of the goblins. One of the amped up, OZ formula goblins; and the 'cure' she was given seems to be only a suppressive. Also, Ultimate Gwen Stacy got killed by Carnage, then her mind was copied into Carnage, making her Ultimate Carnage. She was also apparently depowered by Ultimate Venom, which essentially leaves her as a blob monster modelocked into a replica of her original body, with hints that she might not be 'cured' either.

Also, Ultimate Gwen crushed on Ultimate MJ even while the former was in a relationship with Peter. After he died and was resurrected, MJ and Peter ran off together, leaving Gwen in the dust.

1610 really is weird.

[up][up] To be fair, the Tiger God is meant to be conquered. It's humanity's fear and humanity is meant to conquer it and use its power — the power of the White Tiger. All T'Challa was doing was conquering it so he could borrow its power and participate in the Eternity War.

I want Puck to show up in the MCU so we can get his awesome Badass Boast:

When I was eight, I hunted my first bear. Big grizzly. That was 1922, in the Yukon, and he kept us through a cold winter. In Spain, I fought bulls and fascists—and I let the bulls live. In Nepal, I hunted the tiger god and killed all fear in me. I've fought queens of dreams and the world's secret master. I've fought demons in Hell and stolen their thrones—and those thrones haven't bound me. And it all comes back to one thing. I was eight, full of bear meat and adventure—and I made a vow, Mr. Creel. I vowed I would live an interesting life. I think I've done okay so far, eh?

I'm speaking in a more general sense: so rarely in film adaptations of comics do we see the love interest or sidekick get superpowers themselves, even though it would address one of the fundamental inequalities in the relationship. Of course, there's a reason for that: having a normal to protect adds dramatic tension and gives cheap ways for the villains to target a hero indirectly.

Its so funny how OZ has no cure and can keep people from dying unless your name is Mary Jane or Harry Osborn. In that case fuck you. But if you're Norman Osborn then you can come back to life as many times as you want and the supposed cure used on MJ never comes up.

[up][up] I read that issue recently and its truly awesome.

[up][up][up]One of my own comic book pet peeves is people getting depowered for no good reason; that is, not explicitly a temporary thing or part of an arc where the loss is telegraphed and becomes the plot rather than incidental. Ultimate MJ and Gwen really stick out like sore thumbs in that regard, at least for me. There is a lot that could be done with them, but they have even less characterization and plot stuff to do than most normal people revolving around a superhero.

[up] If I remember that correctly, it was more like he lent the entire Earth the sensory capability of the Power Cosmic that gave everyone five minutes of euphoria of the wonders of space. Spider-Man just convinced him to do so after he did for Mary Jane.

"In the alternate universe story Silver Surfer: Requiem, the Surfer allows Mary Jane Watson-Parker to use the Power Cosmic (which amounted to flying in space on his board for a few hours) for her birthday as a favor to Spider-Man. When she returns, deeply moved by the experience, Spider-Man asks Norrin to use the Power Cosmic and let the entire world feel the freedom that the Surfer feels (and Mary Jane felt). Norrin complies with the request and unleashes a wave of energy so powerful, the entire world stops in its tracks for five minutes."
