Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I never understood why Hulu didn't pick it up. It would be perfect for Hulu.

Has anyone actually seen the pilot they filmed? It's possible the Hulu execs watched it and said, "Y'know what? This isn't very good."

>Okay, so without any kind of joking about it, what IS the gimmick of Squirrel Girl? cuz the way people seem to talk about it, it sounds like it would really annoy me.

She's silliness incarnate basically, her stories involve her defeating super villains who logically she shouldn't be able to,but she can because she's squirrel girl

Yes,she is a bit of meme,a lot like Deadpool, hence why I think her showing up in one his movies wouldn't be too unthinkable

Her gimmick used to be defeating powerful opponents that should be outside her weight class offscreen.

Nowadays her gimmick is defeating opponents with friendship and computer science and squirrels while consistently being a fun book

You probably wouldn't like her because she embarrassed Doctor Doom badly twice. So badly that he rewrote the incident in his head so that he won and just abandoned his evil plan just as he always had intended to the whole time and you can't prove otherwise.

Edit: As an example of defeating people with friendship, her first story arc involved her fighting Kraven The College Administrator who she convinced that fighting giant Monstro whales in the ocean was a lot better than fighting Spider-Mans. And then he kind of went through an arc where he became Kraven the Hunter Hunter who hunted other hunters and beat up Roland Tembo from Jurassic Park Lost World.

And she realized that Galactus keeps coming back to Earth not because he really wants to eat it but because he realizes that the heroes of Earth tend to find an alternate solution. Its his equivalent of ordering in. So she found him a nut planet with no inhabitants so he could have a guilt free binge.

Also, this happened.

Taika Waititi is returning for Thor 4, though this means the Akira film is being put on hold.

That would mean one of several things, Thor will not be in Got G 3 (he's just hitching a ride and will be gone at the start with a line or two explaining as such), or he will be in Got G 3 and be leaving at the end of that film to have whatever adventure is planned for Thor 4, or Thor more or less becomes a Guardian himself the Guardians will also be featuring in Thor 4.

IIRC several of the Guardians actors contracts are not up, so the idea that they will be in Thor 4 would not be too out there and the fact most of Thor's classic cast is kinda….dead.

Oh yeah, I just remember, except for Valkyrie, Thor's entire supporting cast is all... gone.

I wasn't a big fan of Thor Ragnarok, so we'll see. I know me and a friend were some of the only people to have no time for it, so it's not like my lowered eyebrows mean much.

Ryan North apparently saw it (he's the current writer for Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) and he said was really good. There are also reports that executives liked it a lot, but other than that, I don't know.

Hmmmm. I haven't been particularly clamouring for another Thor movie, but then again Ragnarok did without a doubt the best for the character out of any of these movies and he and the Guarduans are certainly in a rather...interesting place after Endgame, so we'll see.

Imo, Squirrel Girl is Marvel’s premiere self-Affectionate Parody character. Much like how I’d love a Hercules movie that was a parody of Thor, I’d love a Squirrel Girl movie that just lampoons the MCU and it’s characteristics in general.

Her early comics were basically making fun of how comic book continuity works.

Doom is a scary uber-threat who is scary and uber. But because a writer once wrote a comic where Squirrel Girl beats his ass like a chump, it's canon now, it will forever be canon, and there's nothing you can do about it.

A character is exactly as powerful as the writer allows them to be. No more, no less. If a writer wants DareDevil to beat the shit out of Thanos, then motherf*cking DareDevil is going to beat the shit out of motherf*cking Thanos, period. That is the point of Squirrel Girl, at least in the early days. She's the antithesis of "Versus" debates.

Stan Lee did a Stan's Rant on this same concept:

"The person who'd win in a fight is the person that the scriptwriter wants to win."

So does anyone else feels a bit weirded out when they watch former movies of MCU actors?

'Cause I was seeing 13 Going on 30note  and fucking hell is it bizarre to see Mark Ruffalo in such a different role.

[up][up] Until someone else comes along and retcons it, then spawns the back and forth about what's canon.

[up] Depends on how much I associate a certain actor with a role. Had a similar reaction to Eternal Sunset on a Spotless Mind.

I... am surprised that they're making a Thor 4. I was really expecting them to stop all solo character films at 3, since that's what they did with Iron Man and Captain America. I guess this means that's not actually a rule, and they can just keep making movies as long as the actors want to play that character.

Good for Guardians, Ant-Man, and Spider-Man, since I don't really want their franchises to end in the next movie.

That is a valid point about the old "Who Would Win" debate. The winner of any fight is who the writer decides will win, unless executives meddle and say something different.

There are a bunch of caveats and etc but Daredevil beat the shit out of an Ultron once.

Sometimes Venom is one of the most dangerous members of Spider-Man's rogues gallery; a powerful and unparalleled nemesis who overpowers and haunts him at every turn.

Sometimes Spider-Man effortlessly beats Venom's worthless ass in the cold open because ain't nobody got time for loser rogues like that.

It all depends on the needs of the story.

There was also that time Spider-Man beat the shit out of Firestar(?), a Herald of Galactus with similar power level to the freaking Silver Surfer.

They didn't even bother handwaving that one.
