Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The "proportioned strength" thing never really made much sense. Ants are relatively strong but that's just the Square-Cube Law in action. tongue

[up][up]And since when comics care about real physics?

It doesn't take a genius to get that the science of Ant-Man is, objectively, bollocks.

Ants also don't have lungs, they breath through holes in their exoskeleton, which wouldn't work if they increased in size. So all of those big ants in Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp would have died from suffocation if this was real science.

Also, their tiny spindly legs wouldn't be able to lift their weight. The Square-Cube Law is a bitch.

By the way, this was what Squirrel Girl's physics professor said:

Square Cube Law: As things get bigger, their surface area is a square of their growth factor, but their volume is cubed. Galileo discovered it. I drew him for you because I'm a good professor. Put it another way: make yourself 10 times larger, your muscles get 100 times as big, but you have to carry 1000 times more weight. That's why elephants look like elephants and not giant mice: you can't just scale up animals and expect them to work.

And yes, you can get around this restriction with certain cosmic rays or exotic particles. I am aware of Pym's work, thank you. It's hard not to be when he published journal articles like "Ha Ha, I'm Giant-Man Now: Screw You, All Other Physicists."

But without cosmic rays or Pym Particles, any animal made giant will absolutely break it's leg with the first step it takes! Remember that well, my students! For the physics I have just shared with you may one day save your life, if not the lives of everyone on the planet!!

Using real physics, Ant-man would die if he tried to do the "Ant-Man + Arrow" combo.

So as they said, real physics is not fun.

Real physics, Ant-Man would suffocate if he shrank to smaller than oxygen molecules.

Even ignoring the Square-Cube Law, the strength of the spiderman is much higher than that of a spider (at least in the comics)

Taking into account that Peter weighs about 80 kg, he has managed to lift a T-90 tank (43 tons) and even a small plane. (About 100 tons)

Spiderman is described as a class 10, even when it is obvious that he can lift much more than that.

Really, if anybody shrank past their own Schwarzschild radius to enter the quantum realm, the sextillion-degree Hawking radiation they'd output in the process would turn half the earth into a smoldering crater.

The Scharzschild radius is actually the radius defining the event horizon of a black hole. So a human's Schwarzschild radius would be 1.04×10^−25 meters.

And this is why I find critiques of Dr Stone not being scientific enough to pedantic.

Cause as fun as science can be if you follow it to the absolute letter, it could wind up sucking out all of the fun.
