Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yes but as the heroes asked, how does riding around on a motorcycle, wearing an evil mask, stealing people's cards and laughing like a maniac & engaging in said card games that supposably destroyed the world actually help save the world? tongue

Or that Yandere Hermaphrodite Duel Dragon gets reincarnated as a card, gets launched into space to be drive insane by evil space light, and then planned to fuse all reality with the boy they are yandere for so all of existence would be the two of them.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.

Honestly I wouldn’t blame card games for that one.

Yubel was a problem that was gonna happen regardless. tongue

Also another Yubel is another case of an attempted sympathetic /nuanced villain who goes to far in their evil actions to gain sympathy.

No that problem was the direct result of lack of communication.

Jaden didn't remember hes a reincarnation of The Chosen One. Despite declaring he would love them forever.

Yubel vowed to protect him from anything that threatened him.

Inevitably kids hurt Jaden and Yubel did their job.

Then Jaden launched them into space driving them insane by the evil space light Jaden was supposed to defeat and his parents decide shocking his brain was a smart idea till they damage him and he got amnesia.

Ah romance & true love......... it really bites you in the ass in the long run. tongue

Though at least you can’t blame that on card game specifically. That is a very personal problem between 2 individuals.

Ya have to give it some respect though for taking the franchise in a direction that to this day has not ever been attempted ever again despite 4 following shows & a Goddamn decade going by,

Stakes, actual character development for the lead, the supporting cast being integral to saving the day. My major complaints lie in the treatment of the old supporting cast & how Yubel basically gets everything they want despite all the horrible atrocities they committed without any form of actual punishment or karma.

Though shit since we are on the topic of what makes a villain work, let’s bring in other villain examples, especially symmetric/nuanced villains & mention the ones that worked & the ones that didn’t work. tongue

I think Guy Pierce was the main reason Killian didn't work as a villain. He just wasn't charismatic enough to make the character work.

Koba is pretty much the only Complete Monster in film that, in my opinion, is still a three-dimensional character. Helps that his slide into villany is actually fairly tragic.

But to re-rail the thread back on topic: Conan the Barbarian. He's technically part of Marvel Comics, how do you all figure he could fit in the MCU?

Maybe he could be in a prequel that introduces Shuma-Gorath. Shuma-Gorath was a recurring threat in the Marvel Conan comics, and its invasions were some of the only situations dire enough for the grim god Crom to directly intervene.

Conan the Barbarian feels like a stock character that would be really out of place in the MCU

[up]He’s in the comics now, for some reason. That would be insanity right there, Gorath comes in from his dimension and following him you hear the “Anvil of Crom”.

My thought is do a thing with Conan that What If did

Have the first act or so set in hyborian times and then Aku tears open a hole in time sending Conan to the future and slash or the modern world. And from there Conan has to stop whatever elder god is causing trouble while being stuck in a world he never made and where people judge him a little for carrying a sword and yelling

The reason being if you want Conan as part of the MCU it’s going to be a hard sell to have him do barbarian in the hyborian times the whole times. The appeal of the MCU is that the characters live in the same universe even if most of the time it doesn’t matter. Just do a stand alone Conan if you want sword and sandle

Wait, isn't that just... Isn't that literally... That's just literally the plot of... That's even the exact name of...

Yeah I was being facetious using the name Aku

But people from fantasy universes ending up in the modern world and specifically New York often used to be as common as normal everyday people being dropped into fantasy worlds, maybe after being hit by a truck

Unnamed samurai jack doesn’t end up in the familiar real world but the principle is similar

Oh, I thought you were saying that Conan literally also fights someone named Aku who opened a portal and sent him into the future, and I was honestly impressed at the writer's cajones to rip off Samurai Jack that directly and obviously.

I call those kind of stories Reverse Isekai, and they're still fairly common as a cheap excuse to make a live-action movie involving fictional characters without having to spend too much money shooting in their fantasy world.

The current storyline with Conan started in Avengers: No Road Home, where the Scarlet Witch ended up in the Hyborian Age and was helped by Conan...but then both were dropped back into the present day when they followed the Goddess Nyx. (It was a really great storyline and I highly recommend it.)

I mean, the possibilities for fish out of water humor are tremendous.

Thor 1 is kind of a reverse isekai I guess.

And much of the humor is in Thor reacting to modern Midgard*

Film rights and comic book rights are usually licensed separately, so Marvel holding one doesn't necessarily mean it holds the other.

I was thinking more the Walt Simonson run which went for minimalism in its Midgard star Earth footnotes. And also used it all the dang time.
